Abstract
589,286. Opening and closing windows. SMYE, A. April 17, 1945, No. 7138/44. [Class 20 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXIV and XXV] Relates to window opening and closing devices embodying transmissior mechanism of Bowden type employing a flat flexible metal tape guided in a corresponding channel. The channel is of open form having marginal portion: 16 bent to embrace the edges of the tape 14, and the medial part 17 of the channel is spaced away from the tape as shown to reduce friction. The mechanism is attachable to a suppor by screws passed through apertures in the part 17, the tape having slots 18 in the region of the apertures to give access thereto, or to allow passage of the screws if the open side of the channel be applied to the support. The channel and tape may be bent where required and in the application to operating pivoted ventilators in a roof the tape runs vertically up the wall from an operating handle, is bent at the eaves, and continues up the sloping roof to a ventilatoroperating link. The mechanism may operate a single ventilator, or a number of ventilators simultaneously, e.g., in a vehicle. When used to operate sliding ventilators, one, or a series may be directly connected to the tape, which may be operated by a cranked handle with a pinion engaging a rack on the tape.
