[Class 80 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXIX and XXXVII] An electric motor reciprocates a member (e.g. a piston valve) through screw and nut mechanism and actuates switches so that at the end of travel the motor is stopped by a reverse torque and then disconnected from the supply. The motor spindle 11 (Fig. 1) rotates sleeve-nut 12 supported by a ball-thrust bearing 13 in insulating block 14, thereby reciprocating screwed rod 23. The latter has an enlargement 19 slidable in a bore 17 in block 14 and carrying on a transverse pin 20 rollers which run in slots in block 14 to prevent rotation of rod 23. The enlargement 19 also engages one or other of the plungers 57 and 58 projecting into bore 17, thereby actuating limit switches mounted on the block. Direction-responsive switches on the block are actuated according to the direction of rotation, by arm 45 which is rotatably free on sleeve 12 but gripped by spring-pressed washers 48 and 49. The rod 23 reciprocates the member through sleeve 25 and balls 35 pressed resiliently into groove 36 by encircling spring 37; this allows sleeve 25 to be reciprocated independently by sufficient force to force balls 35 out of groove 36.
