Abstract
733,840. Hydraulic jacks. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 24, 1953 [Dec. 5, 1952], No. 32526/53. Class 69 (2). [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXX] An actuator is provided with alternative fluid pressure and screw and nut drives each of which can operate the actuator in both directions. A piston 11 secured to a movable actuating rod 15 has journalled therein one end of a screw 20 engaged with a ball nut 44 which is rotatable through a worm drive 55, 62 by a reversible electric motor 68, but which is adapted to be held from rotation by a magnetic brake and clutch mechanism (not shown) when the motor is de-energized. A rod 29 which is splined to screw 20 and is journalled at 37 in the actuator casing carries a disc brake 31 which when the fluid pressure circuit is de-energized is urged into engagement with the end 32 of the casing by a spring-loaded piston 37 so locking the screw. The fluid-pressure circuit is arranged so that on admission of fluid to either side of piston 11 through ports 60, 61 fluid is simultaneously admitted through port 40. This releases brake 31 so allowing the screw to rotate and the piston 11 to move. With the brake 31 operative and the screw thereby held from rotation, rotation of nut 44 by the motor 68 again effects movement of the piston and the rod 15. In a modification (not shown) the disc brake 31 may be replaced by a dog tooth arrangement.
