Abstract

587,460. Lifting - jacks. VANCE, W. G. C., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. June 23, 1944, No. 12023. [Class 78(iii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A screw jack, particularly for actuating the landing gear of an aircraft, is normally operated by hand or by power but can be operated in an emergency by fluid under pressure. As shown, the screw 3 is carried by a head 5 attached by a lug 1 to one member and is normally actuated through reducing gear by hand or by an electric motor 13 through a clutch 14 whilst the nut 6 forms part of the end of a fluid-tight cylinder 7 secured to the other member by a lug 2. The screw and nut may be of the ball-track type. In an emergency, a sealed cartridge containing oil under pressure, compressed air or gas is broken or fired electrically to admit fluid under pressure to act on a piston 15 carried by the screw 3. The fluid is admitted to the cylinder either through a hole in the lower end or preferably through the screw which is hollow. The fluid pressure is also transmitted through a pipe 18 to a cylinder 20 to disengage the clutch 14, and in addition may be utilised to disengage mechanical latches and/or braking means comprising springs which, are normally released electromagnetically. The nut 6 may carry a piston 23 operating in a dust excluding cylinder 8, fluid being supplied to the cylinder by leakage or by a separate pipe. If emergency operation of the jack in the reverse direction is required additional fluid pipes are connected above the piston 15 and below the piston 23.
