Abstract

631,344. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. WATSON, C. D., and MANSELL, R. C. S. March 10, 1947, No. 6691. [Class 135] Control surface actuating means for an aircraft comprises a master hydraulic jack, a slave hydraulic jack and mechanical transmission means whereby linear motion of the pistons of the two jacks is converted into rotary motion and is applied to differential gearing whereby valve means controlling the slave jack is set by and in accordance with movement of the piston of the master jack, and reset by and in accordance with movement of the piston of the slave jack. An embodiment shows six jacks operating aircraft flaps, but the invention may be applied to folding-wing arrangements. A master jack 17, Fig. 1, is controlled by a valve 16 via a hand lever 18. As the jack piston moves, it rotates by screwthreads a shaft 14 and bevel-gears 13, 15. The bevel 15, through a flexible drive 19, a reduction gear 20, and a spring 21, resets the valve 16. The bevel 15 also operates the valves 22 of slave jacks 31, 32 through flexible drives 29, 30, bevel-gears 26, 25, Fig. 2, and a screw 23, each valve being reset from the jack piston 10 by the rotation of bevels 13, 15, 28, 27 and a nut 24. The smaller faces of the jack pistons are always loaded by pressure-fluid from the supply. The remaining slave jacks are connected one to the other and operate similarly. In a modification, all the slave jack bevels 26 are connected by flexible drives to the master jack bevel 15. In a further modification, the bevel 15 of the jack 32 is coupled to the bevel 26 of the jack 38, as well as to that of jack 37. -
