A geared actuator for attachment to a normally hand-operated fluid valve having a stem 5 comprises an externally splined stem adaptor 27 for mounting on the stem in place of the hand wheel, an intermediate member 31 splined engagement with the adaptor, a rotatable carrier 33 for supporting a gear 34 by which the stem is rotated, and sets of interengaging lugs, such as 41, 42, 47, on the intermediate member and the rotatable carrier, the width of the spaces between the lugs on one set being greater than the width of the lugs on the other set, whereby lost-motion is obtained to enable the sets of lugs to be brought into engagement to free the valve stem. A pinion, rotated by a hand wheel or by an hydraulic or electric motor, rotates the gear 34 and its carrier until the lost-motion between the lugs, which may be 45 degrees, is taken up and the drive is transmitted through the intermediate member and the adaptor to the valve stem. The intermediate member has grooves to receive pins 49 projecting inwardly from the carrier and is thus located axially while a rod 23 serves as an indicator of the position of the valve stem.
