588,180. Casement and like windows. STRATTON, J. W. Feb. 2, 1945, No. 2687. [Class 20 (iii)] A casement or like window of the type in which the hanging stile of the sash is provided at its ends with axially aligned spindle members associated with bearing members comprising slots in the rails or stiles of the frame adjacent and at right angles to the hanging stile of the frame, whereby the sash is adapted to slide in the frame away from the hanging stile and provide a space between the hanging stiles of the frame and the sash, is characterized in that the bearing member slots are formed with arcuate ends of enlarged diameter and each spindle member has flats formed on its sides, so that the spindle members slide along the slots only when the flats are in alignment with the slots. As shown in Fig. 1, the spindle members mounted on the plates 16 secured to the sash rails 12 and 13 comprise trunnions 11 whose flats 31 engage the bearing members formed by the slots 20 with enlarged ends 28, 29 provided on the plates 26, Fig. 3, secured to the frame rails 21 and 22. To prevent canting as the sash slides along the guides the trunnions 11 are formed with a head portion 32 of greater diameter than the slots 20 but less than the ends 28 and 29 and the rails 21 and 22 are provided with the recesses 33 to afford clearance for the head 32. When applied to metal frame windows, the trunnions are secured by welding, forging &c. to each end of the hanging sash rail and the bearing members are formed in plates welded or otherwise secured to the frame stile.
