Abstract

590,671. Sliding sash windows. BRAYBROOK, V. W. March 8, 1945, Nos. 5755 and 9214. [Class 20 (iii)] In a window of the type having one or more vertically sliding sashes, tongues and recesses form the guiding means for the sashes in the fixed styles, the tongues being formed integral with one component and the recesses formed in the other component, and the fixed stiles, the upper or lower halves of which are removable or pivotable, terminate a short distance below the pulley head, to the underside face of which the pulleys are fixed. The stiles, formed in two halves, may take various forms. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the stiles 30 are formed with the recesses 30a to receive the tongues 31 of the sliding sashes 32. The pulley carrying plate 41 is formed with a slot 43 which engages a fixed screw or stud so placed on the head 40 that the plate 41 extends behind the stile 30 and can be secured in position with additional screws to the head 40, after the assembly of the head boxing 28 and the jamb boxing 34, 34a. In Figs. 12 and 15, the stiles 33 are channel section metal members engaging grooves in the sashes 36 and 37. The bottom of the lower halves of the stiles are provided with a pivot 60 carried by the plate 59 secured to the stiles and engaging in a slotted plate 61 secured to the jamb. When the pivot 60 is in its lowermost position in the plate 61 the windows may be pivoted inwards for cleaning. In a modification the sashes are double glazed and the fixed stiles formed with the necessary additional grooves. In double glazed sashes, the glass itself may act as a guide for the sashes and the tongues and recesses formed on the sash be omitted.
