[Class 51 (ii)] In a furnace in which hot air or hot gases are circulated within or around the furnace chamber by means of one or more fans situated within the furnace structure each driven by an external power unit, e.g., an electric motor, and each having a driving shaft extending through the furnace wall or roof with a grease lubricated bearing in or adjacent to the power unit, a liquid cooled muff is provided for the driving shaft between the power unit-and the furnace cover. The fan 10 may be mounted on the shaft 13 driven by the electric motor 12, and the cooling muff 15, made of copper or the like, completely encircles the shaft being equipped with water supply and discharge pipes 16, 17, the rate of flow of the water being controllable by valves 18, 19, and visible over a funnel 21. The water may be cooled and re-circulated, and the muff 15 may be conveniently formed of two halves joined by a short pipe, or it may substantially but not completely enclose the shaft.
