568,980. Dynamo-electric machines. McDONALD, J., and G.W.B. ELECTRIC FURNACES, Ltd. Oct. 11, 1943, No. 16638. [Class 35] [Also in Group XII] In a furnace having an internal atmosphere - circulating fan mounted on the end 2a of the shaft 2 of an external electric motor 1, the portion of the shaft 2 outside the furnace is hollow and cooled by water supplied through a fixed inner tube 3. In the vertical arrangement shown, the shaft 2 carries a hood 6 which deflects the outflowing water downwardly into a tank 4 having an outlet 7. A modification is described in which the shaft 2 is horizontal, the outflowing water in this case being discharged through apertures in the shaft into a surrounding annular chamber.
