.To all whom 'it may concern:
' Be it known that l, JOSEPH C. KANAK, a citizen of the United States, and a. resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Hot-Air Furnaces, of which the following is a specifica-` tion.
My invention relates tonew and useful improvements in hot air furnaces, and more particularlyto a circulation forcin device or apparatus adapted to be installe in any hot air furnace.
rlhe object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive apparatus to be used in connection with a warm air furnace,
' for the purpose of stimulating the air cir- "i casing -7 and restin on the usual lower rim culation within the furnace by means of an additional amount of cool air delivered by said apparatus to said furnace at a greater velocity than that at which the air normally circulates in the furnace and system by its own gravity, in order to produce more comfort to the user and a reduction in the amount of fuel used.

The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The device or apparatus comprises an outer housing 10 provided at one end with a curved iange 11, fastened to the `furnace casing with bolts or other suitable .tasten-V ing means, and' provided at its lower end with a curved'ange 12 bearing against the 13 of the furnace. he sides of the housing are fastened onto the furnace casing wit clamping means in the form of a pair of metal members 1e having a plurality of folds vor overlapping anges, the two inner folds 15 and 16 of which ,are placed in `the opening 6 and firmly clamped upon the casin as shown in Fig. l, and the outer, latera ly extending folds or anges 17 of which are then bolted or otherwise suitably fastened onto the sides'of said mounting. rlhe extended upper and lower anges 1l and 12, and especially the folded clamping members 14.-, provide means for conveniently mounting my device upon 'the casings of furnaces of varioussizes, shapes, and makes, and for properly mounting my device in openings 6 even though such openings are not cut to exact size and shape.
-An air directing member 18 is mounted within said housing, preferably byfastening its upper and lower walls to the walls of said housing, and has an upwardly curved inner `'or front wall 19 provided with an inwardly and downwardly extending lip 20 out from said wall forming a laterally extending slot 21 beneath said lip, several such lips and slots may fbe provided if desired, and the upper and inner end of said member 19 is formed into an opening or air outlet. The arrangementof the wall 19 and lip 20, and the slot 21 and upper opening, form effective means for directing the air diagonally upwards against the cuter surface of the fire pot, thereb forcing the warmer air, near the tire pot, irectly upwards and con- -siderably increasing the speed of circulation of-the air. The member i8 is vspaced inward from the walls of the housing, thereby forming an air passage 22 on each side of said me ber, which serves as an intake to permit .t e passageof warm air from the interior of the furnace casing to mingle with.`

Intake means is provided in the form of a sleeve 23 at the outer end ofthe housing, and has an intake ipe or conduit 24- mounted thereon, a suitagle air controlling means 25, as a damper or the like, being interposed in eithersaid conduit or said sleeve. The conduit 24 is preferably arranged to bring in cold air, from the outside of the building on may be arranged to take in partly ood air from the outside and partly returning warm air from the rooms of the building;V
or the conduit may be omitted and the air taken in direct through the sleeve from the furnace room; or the air may be taken in from any combination of suitable places.
Means for driving or forcing the air to circulate in the system is provided in the form of an electric ,fan 26 driven by its motor 27 which is connected with a suitable source of power by the electric conductor 28 extending through a suitable opening in the housing. The fan is bolted or otherwise suitably fastened to the housing` and placed across 'the front opening of the directing member 18, so as to force the outer air through said member and also to draw partly warmed air through passages 22. A door 30 is provided in` the housing for conveniently mounting the electric fan and to afford ready access thereto, such door may be mounted slidably in flanges 31 or in any `other suitable manner.
From the above disclosure it becomes apparent that thel circulation of air from the furnace to the rooms of the'building, and through the entire system, is suitably increased, andthat such increase may be regulated by regulating the speed of the fan, through the motor, and that even when the furnace fire is so low that normally the circulation would stop, -my apparatus will force the circulation to continue. It is fully apparent that my apparatus will stimulate and speed up the circulation in the entire system and will increase the inflow of cold- -air through the usual cold air intake ducts commonly provided on the furnace. And by bringin more fresh air into the system will also ai in Ventilating the building. It is also apparent that the device will supply an additional amount of fresh air -through the.
conduit 24 into the heating system, by ravity of the colder air, even'though the an is not in operation.
While I have illustrated and described the y preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Havmg described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters vPatent is:
1. In combination with a hot air furnace having an outer casing with an opening provided therein, a device mounted in said opening and comprising means for taking in cool air, means for directing said air upwards within said casing, means on the inward wall of said air directing means for also leading air against-the inner wall of said casing, means for conducting warm air directly from the furnace casing into said device, and

2. In combination with a hot air furnace having a fire pot and an outer casing with an opening cut therein, a device mounted in said opening and comprising means for taking. in cold air, means for controlling thc amount of said cold air taken in, means for taking in warm air from the furnace casi-nthT into said device, and a curved wall witha slot and lip thereon for directing4 said air diagonally upwards against the vfire pot in said casing.
3. In combination with a hot air furnace having a fire pot and an outer casing surrounding the same and provided with an opening, an air circulating device comprising means for mounting it in said opening,
said mounting overlapping Hanges including means adapted to fit said deviceon various sized openings and furnaces, and'means for taking in external cool air. i
4; In combination with a hot air furnace having an outer casing with an opening cut therein, an air circulating device comprising a housing provided with means for taking in air and directingit diagonally upwards in said casing, means for mounting said housin in various sized openings and on various mfze furnaces, said mounting means including a curved flange for fastening the housing to the casing wall and clamping members with a plurality of over-lapping flanges for clamping the casing wall there-between.
5. In combination with a hot air`furnace having an outer casing, an air circulating devlce comprising means for mounting it in `said casing, means for taking in external cool air, means for taking in warm air from within said casing, means on said device for forcing circulation of air, and means on said device permitting convenient access to said orcing means.
6. An air circulating device for a hot air furnace said ldevice comprising a housing mountable in the furnace casing, a fresh air intake on said housing external of said casing, an air outlet connected with said intake for directing air upwards within said casing, air intake. means surrounding said outlet for conducting warmed air from the casing'into said device, and means to force said air to circulate.
7. An air circulating device for a hot air furnace, said device comprising a housing mountable in the furnace casing and rovided with means for mounting it on various `sized casings, an air intake on said housing,
an `air outlet leading from said intake and d1rected upwardly, means for forcing the air to circulate, and a door on the side of said 'housing for introducing said air forcing means and for admitting convenient access thereto.
8. An air circulating device for a hot air furnace, said device comprising a housing, an air intake on saidhousing air outlet means leading from said intake and having' a curved Wall for directing air diagonally upwards, a slot and vlip on said Wall for also directing air diagonally upwards, an air intake at each side of said outlet means, means for forcing the circulation of said air, and operable .means on said housing for admitting convenient access to said air forcing means.
9. An air circulating device for a furnace provided with an air circulating system, said device comprising anV outer member connected with said circulating system, an inner member mounted in said outer member and provided with a plurality of openings arranged to direct air upwardly at separate points, and inlets on said device for taking in air from the exterior and also directly from the interior of said circulating' system.
