Abstract

587,889. Making cooling fins. BRONANDER, W. B. Dec. 24, 1943, Nos. 21681 and 21682. Convention dates, Nov. 5, 1942. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXVII] Caulking.-A double walled cooling fin particularly for cooling aircraft engine cylinders comprises spaced parallel walls 25, 26, Fig. 3, terminating in a. folded portion 27 which fits in a groove 30 in the member 31 to be cooled so that pressure applied to the edge of the fold 27 forces the walls laterally to grip the sides of the groove and secure the fin in position. The fins are preferably divided into semicircular sections A, B and pressure is applied to the fold 27 to cause the fin walls to grip the groove sides. Deflectors 37, 38, Fig. 6, may be arranged so as to confine the air between the fin walls. In some cases the fin strip is in one piece and is notched to facilitate fitting around the cylinder groove. The fins may be formed with circumferential walls 48, Fig. 11 to confine the air flow and staggered off set portions 51 are provided to maintain the fins in correct spaced relation. The fins on a cylinder having an aluminium head secured by a joint 62 may be arranged as shown in Figs. 10 and 17. In another modification, Fig. 18, the two fin walls 70, 72 are parts of separate members with bent-up ends 71, 73. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also apparatus, Fig. 9 (Cancelled), comprising a bar 35 which is fed beneath a pressure roller 36 while the member 31 is rotated to secure the fins in their grooves. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
