An object of the invention is to provide an improved connection between the barrel and head of a cylinder, which will insure a fluidtight closure for the end of the cylinder.
A further object is to provide a construction of the barrel and head whereby the assembly thereof and tightening of the connection therebetween may be facilitated.
The above objects are accomplished by providing the head end of the cylinder barrel with a taper, which may be frusto-conical or otherwise according to the shape of the cylinder, and providing the head with a similarly shaped bore adapted to snugly fit the taper of the barrel. Associated with the barrel and head there may be provided members for securing the head to the barrel and for tightening the connection between these members.

Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of one form of an engine cylinder made in accordance with the principles of my invention.
Figure 2 is a form differing from that in Figure 1 in certain details, and
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1, showing the radiating character of the ears on the head of the cylinder.
Referring to the drawing in detail by reference characters and particularly to Figures 1 and 8, 10 designates the barrel of a cylinder and 11 the cap closing the outer end thereof, the cap being provided with the usual sparking mechanism shown at 12 and the barrel with the usual piston 13 reciprocably mounted therein.
The invention which I seek to protect consists in the formation of the outer end of the cylinder barrel with a tapered surface 14 which may be frusto-conical in shape and is adapted to fit snugly within a frustoconical portion 15 of the bore formed in the head of the cylinder. These surfaces may be measured so as to snugly fit one within the other and to provide a fluid-tight connection between the barrel and the head. In
order to provide against dislodgment of the head from the barrel, I may provide a suitable connection between the two members such a connection being shown in Figure 1 of the drawing in the nature of ears 16 and 17 arranged respectively to extend radially from the head and from the barrel. The ears 17 are arranged in a plane below the frusto-conical portion 14:. The upper ears are apertures as at 18 to receive the shank 19 of bolts, heads 20 of which rest on the 50 upper surfaces of the cars 16. The lower ears may be threaded to form a connection with the threaded ends of the bolts. By this arrangement, it will be readily seen that the head may be gradually drawn upon the 55 end of the barrel to provide a fluid-tight connection therewith. It is to be understood that other connecting means may be employed in this connection and that the construction may be varied to said conditions.
In Figure 2 a variation of the invention as disclosed in Figure 1 is shown in which the head is provided with an extension adapted to fit over the major portion of the barrel. The head and its extension may be formed of aluminum or an alloy thereof or of any other suitable material having a high coefficient of heat conductivity. This head is designated by the numeral 11 and the extension or skirt by the numeral 11". The lower end of this skirt may have a frustoconical flare as indicated at 21 adapted to he slid upon a similar frusto-conical portion of the barrel as designated at 22.
In this case the ears 16 and 17 are spaced further apart than the ears 16 and 17, in Figure 1. In order to accommodate the skirt 11 the bolts 23 are of greater length than the bolts used in the device as illustrated in Figure 1.
It is believed that it will be apparent from the foregoing disclosure that I have provided a connection between the head and barrel of an engine cylinder such that leakage of the fuel therefrom will be prevented and an assembly that may be quickly and readily made with great accuracy and strength.

frusto-conlcal bore of substantially the same taper as that of the end of the cylinder, and means to bind said head upon said barrel.
2. In combination, a cylinder barrel member having its outer extremity externally tapered, a cylinder head comprising an imperforate hand having a; bore tapered to fit the taper of the barrel, and means for drawing the head onto said tapered end, said means consisting of ears extending radially from the barrel and head and tension bolts extending through the ears respectively.
