Abstract
587,175. Gauges. HOWELL, H., and RICHFIELD & SON, Ltd., T. Aug. 20, 1944, No 13941. [Class 106 (ii)] Conical surfaces are measured by a device comprising means for indicating relative displacement such as a dial gauge, a convex member adapted to contact the surface of the core at some distance from the apex, and a second member adapted to contact the object being measured at the same time and at a different distance from the apex, the two members being operatively connected to the relatively inovable parts of the dial gauge. The ring gauges 2, 8, Fig. 1, are secured to concentrically arranged holders 1, 7. A plunger 6 secured to the holder 7 can slide freely in the bore of a.plug 4 forming part of the body of a dial gauge 5 and located in an aperture in the holder 1. The gauging surfaces of both rings are finished to the same radius. A device for gauging internal tapers employs spaced gauging discs separated by a helical spring. In a modification of this device, each disc is replaced by three equi-spaced arms or two opposedarms. In the case of both external and internal gauges one gauge member may be adapted to abut a flange or shoulder on the object, the other gauge member only contacting the taper periphery. In Fig. 8, the spindle 22 having a taper A to be gauged is mounted on vee-blocks 24 on a bed-plate 23. The gauging device comprises a plate 26 supported from the bed-plate by balls and having,two sets of vertical gauging cylinders 29, 32. Both sets are mounted on transverse slides 28, 31 and the slides 31 are mounted on longitudinal slides 30. The spindle 13 of a dial gauge 5 mounted on a slide 31 abuts a slide 28. The diametral spacing of the gauging cylinders may be varied by the use of gauge blocks 33, 34.
