Abstract
586,503. Transformers and inductances. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and FRIEDLANDER, E. Dec. 15, 1944, No 25200. [Class 38 (ii)] A variable transformer or inductance has in its magnetic core an air gap of adjustable length between a fixed pole surface and the surface of a rotatable magnetic member, the two surfaces being of spiral outline so that as the length of the air gap changes it remains uniform over the surface area. In a double transformer suitable for use in a Scott-connected three-two phase system, the two sets of coupled coils 2, 4 and 3, 5 on separate flux paths of the laminated core 1 are each provided with leakage paths comprising fixed poles 7, 8, air gaps, and a rotatable laminated member 9. The fullsized laminations of member 9, half of one of which is shown by the solid line above the centre-line in Fig. 1, are interleaved alternately with the laminations of a bridge 6 which carries the member 9 on a spindle 10, and in the plane of each of the latter laminations, member 9 carries a further plate at top and bottom, one of which is shown by the solid line below the centre-line. Member 9 can be rotated by a handle 11 through a limited angle determined by the co-operation of these further plates and laminations of bridge 6, to vary the length of the air gaps, which owing to the spiral profiles of poles 7, 8 and of the faces of member 9 remain uniform over the gap.
