Abstract
550,696. Transformers. ABBEY, A. (Wilson Welder & Metals Co., Inc.). July 16, 1941, No. 9006. [Class 38 (ii)] A variable reactance transformer comprises two or more pairs of core legs extending between magnetic end rings 12 formed of coiled strip, a group of fixed coils 31, 32 forming either the primary or secondary winding staggered about a median plane, and two groups of inversely staggered movable coils 35, 36 lying on opposite sides of the fixed coils and simultaneously movable in opposite directions, as by a right- and left-handed screwed operating spindle 16, to vary the degree of coupling with the fixed coils. The constructional details of the core and of the winding supporting structure are generally similar to those described in Specification 550,422 where two pairs of fixed and movable windings are employed, switching arrangements as shown in Fig. 8 may be provided for permitting either a single coil, two coils in parallel, or four coils in parallel to be used.
