Abstract
586,071. Optical gauging apparatus. HERBERT, Ltd., A., and CURSON, T. Oct. 18, 1944, No. 20126. [Class 106 (ii)] Optical gauging apparatus comprises a ball member biased to engage a surface, the contour of which is to be gauged, a similar ball member movable in unison with the first and held in spaced relation thereto, the second ball member being disposed in a beam of light, and means for moving the ball member in unison with respect to the said surface. As shown, the workpiece 11 is held by a member 12 movable at right angles to the plane of the paper. A ball member 15 rests on the surface of the workpiece under the weight of the member 16 to which it is attached. A second ball member 19 is adjustable within a window 20 in the member 16 by a screw 18 and light passing through the window 20 and via suitable magnifying mirrors projects a shadow of the ball 19 on to a screen marked with a template of the standard workpiece, such as that disclosed by Specification 562,692. The balls 15, 19 are movable across the workpiece by arm 23 on a slide 28 under the action of a micrometer 30 against a stop 31.
