Abstract

546,658. Levels; protractors. BLACKBURN AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and DOUGLAS, L. C. Feb. 10, 1941, No. 1812. [Classes 97 (ii) and 97 (iii)] A device for indicating the angular disposition of a surface or the relative angular dispositions of two relatively movable surfaces, particularly for use for determining the incidence of an aircraft wing and its aileron comprises a bar 1 which is fixed in spaced relation to the surface of a wing 4 by means such as suction cups 5 and an arm 19 pivoted to the bar 1 and provided with an abutment for the edge of the aileron whereby the bar 1 is positioned correctly in its longitudinal direction. The aircraft is placed in the attitude for level flying and the bar 1 applied to the undersurface of the wing 4 by suction cups 5 and screws 7 which are manipulated until the block gauges 2, 3 contact the wing surface for correct spatial disposition of the bar, the arm 19 having an end projection engaging the edge of the aileron 15 correctly positioning the bar 1 in the longitudinal direction. A pendulum 10, 11 and scale 9 determines the angular incidence of the wing 4 while a protractor scale 14 and pointer 16 linked to the aileron 15 indicates the relative angular disposition of the wing and aileron.
