Abstract

685,490. Linear-dimension gauges. GOLDSBURY, F. E. June 29, 1951 [Oct. 19, 1950], No. 25525/50. Class 106 (ii). A micrometer gauge for taking internal measurements comprises a rigid U-shaped body 10 having a plunger 29 in one limb 13 and a micrometer screw in the other limb 12, a fixed jaw member 21 on the limb 12 and a movable jaw member 31 on the plunger 29, the two jawmembers projecting outwards side-by-side in a plane perpendicular to the micrometer screw axis. The plunger 29 is resiliently urged against the tip 17 of the micrometer screw and, when desired, the movable jaw member 31 is secured to the plunger 29 by screw means 32. In use, the two jaw members are allowed to remain in engagement with each other while the head 48 is turned to give a reading on the scale 44 that equals the known thickness between the outer tip portions 26 and 35 of the jaws, say 0.1 inch. The screw 32 is then tightened and the micrometer may then be used for measuring internal dimensions between 0.1 and 1 inch. Alternatively the movable jaw member 31 may be moved along the plunger 29 to any other position which is convenient for the measurement range desired, the resulting necessary correction to the reading on the scale 44 being ascertained by inserting trial gauge blocks, a measuring-rod or equivalent means between the internal faces 25 and 34 of the jaws 21 and 31, respectively. In Fig. 1 the jaws 21 and 31 lie in the plane of the micrometer but they may, alternatively, extend in a plane that is perpendicular to the plane of the micrometer. In Fig. 5, the modified arrangement and shape of the jaws 24b and 31b enables the micrometer to gauge internal distances of 6 inches or more, the larger dimensions being made possible by the use of a plunger 29c extending beyond the limb 13 with a movable jaw member 31c thereon. The spring 37 is operatively connected with the plunger 29 at 39, Fig. 1, in a manner preventing angular movement of the plunger 29 about its axis. The projecting end 29a of the plunger 29 also serves as a depth gauge, using the surface 15a of the body as datum.
