[Class 106 (iv)] In a light beam indicator system of the type in which an angularly moving mirror reflects a projected beam on to a scale, there is interposed in the path of the beam a mirror or refracting medium so shaped that the resulting deflection on the scale bears to the deflection of the moving mirror a relationship which follows a different law from that which it otherwise would. Fig. 1 (Prov.) shows a mirror FM shaped to transform the approximately linear relationship between the scale and angle of deflection of a mirror galvanometer into a logarithmic one, SC being an arbitrarily chosen logarithmic scale, GM being the galvanometer mirror and the shape of the interposed mirror FM being obtained graphically by trial. This consists of drawing the paths of rays from GM to arbitrary points and then to the appropriate parts of the scale, e.g. G, O<SP>1</SP> O, to obtain the directions of the tangents to the mirror. Those points O<SP>1</SP>, M<SP>1</SP>, L<SP>1</SP>, &c. are chosen which enable a smooth curve to be drawn through the tangents. Fig. 2 shows how to obtain the shape of a block of refracting material to be used instead of a mirror. Two lines F<SP>1</SP>, F<SP>2</SP> are drawn parallel to the chosen scale SC and the outline of F<SP>2</SP> is modified graphically by using the formula Á sin i=sin r. As shown, a scale range of 0db-18db has been chosen, the ray corresponding to 18db being drawn normal to the block F<SP>1</SP>, F<SP>2</SP>, In a further embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown), the block is thicker and the surface F<SP>1</SP> is modified, F<SP>2</SP> being left plane and having the scale marked on it.
