A variable focal length optical system comprises four components: the first a fixed converging component; the second a movable diverging component consisting of at least three elements of which two are connected together: the third another diverging component: the fourth a converging component consisting of at least two elements; either the third or fourth component being movable with the second component so that the image remains in a fixed plane. A fifth component is used in combination with the system to obtain a real image. Optical data is given in the Specification.
