Abstract

584,748. Traffic lights. POWERS, F. T. July 10, 1944, No. 13177. Convention date, July 21, 1943. [Class 118 (ii)] A traffic light comprises two differently coloured sets of four filters spaced 90 degrees apart in the sides .of a casing enclosing two pairs of diametrically opposed light sources, and means for oscillating the light sources so as to cause pairs of opposite filters of each set to be alternately illuminated. As shown in Fig. 1, lamps 30 illuminate red filters 12 and lamps 36 at right angles to them illuminate green filters 13, the lamps being mounted on a vertical shaft 21. This, shaft is periodically oscillated through 90 degrees by means of projecting pins 67, 68 on a horizontal disc 45 (Fig. 3), slowly rotated through gearing 42 from a motor 40. The pins strike corresponding projections 64, 65 mounted on a shaft 61 carried on the bracket 24 which also pivotally supports the shaft 21, and the two shafts are connected by an arm 73, pin 74, link 72 and arm 60. The arm 73 is held in its two positions by leaf springs 76 engaging with the pin 74, which are released just before the next oscillation by cams 80 adjustably mounted on the disc 45. Numerous holes 70 are provided in the disc for the pins 67, 68 to allow for variations in the duration of the traffic signals.
