Abstract

592,363. Traffic signals. TOWERS, H. E., and HODGES, H. Jan. 17, 1945, Nos. 1376 and 34363. [Class 118 (ii)] In a road traffic control mechanism in which differently coloured lamps are switched on and off automatically in turn for display at one or more signal apertures in a casing, the lamps are arranged behind a drum Q, provided with peripheral numerical signs T and intermittently rotated on a horizontal axis K so that one numeral at a time is illuminated at a signal opening for a predetermined period, e.g. one second, and is then changed instantaneously, the numerals indicating the time remaining before a change of signal. In the form shown the drum is rotated by an electric motor A, having a speed regulator B, through gear C and an arm E contacting pins F projecting from the drum, and is held in its correct rest positions by a spring H acting on a cam-wheel G. Pins M on the drum rotate a gear-wheel N operating a rotary switch O for controlling three pairs of lamps (not shown), i.e. red, amber and green, having a common reflector which focuses the light on to a display opening U. In a modification, a second signal opening may be provided for pedestrians.
