Traffic signalling apparatus comprises rotatable daytime signalling plates 6, 7 having light permeable discs, e.g. 8. behind which are signalling lamps for night-time operation. Each signal unit comprises a pair of light permeable discs 6. 7 separated by a housing which contains lamps 28, 29 and reflectors 12, rotatable about a vertical shaft 14 which is driven by a control unit 5. The shaft 14 comprises two separable sections so that the signalling plate unit may be removed and replaced by a manually rotatable daytime unit, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), if required. The drive unit 5 for the signal plate unit comprises a receiver 24 the output from which controls a relay 23. When it is desired to give a " go '' signal to the traffic at one of the signal points control 3a in transmitter 3 is operated to a position which causes a signal to be transmitted which is picked up by the required receiver only to operate its relay 23. Contact 21 then changes over completing the circuit to motor 16, rotating the signal unit until cam 26 opens switch 19. The motor then stops and the green " go " signal is displayed. Switch 27 also rotates to complete the circuit to the lamp 28, or 29. illuminating the " go " signal when switch 37 is closed. When control 3a is returned to neutral relay 23 is released, and the motor rotates the signal unit, unit cam 25 opens switch 18. The motor then stops and the red stop " signal is displayed, its associated lamp circuit being completed by switch 27. In an alternative construction. Figs. 10, 11 (not shown), a single fixed lamp is used, and a reflector rotating with the signal unit directs the light on to the required signal surface. A pair of signalling units of the type described may be employed for controlling traffic from two directions.
