In a gas lighting apparatus of the kind in which light from a flat open flame 6 is concentrated in a substantially horizontal plane by optical means such as a drum lens 4 or a reflector in the form of a surface of revolution having a parabolic generator, the plane of the flame is disposed either in or parallel to the horizontal plane 7 through the focus of the optical means. The drum lens may be a part only of a complete cylinder. The flame preferably flashes intermittently.
