Abstract

584,064. Protective coatings. PYRENE CO., Ltd. (Parker Rust-Proof Co.). Oct. 30, 1944, No. 21184. [Class 82 (ii)] In a method of forming a phosphate coating on a metal surface, an aqueous accelerated solution of phosphoric acid or an acid phosphate is brushed over the surface by repeated contact of bristles with each part of the surface, each part being so brushed within the first one-tenth of the time in which a coating would be fully formed without brushing. As shown, cylindrical brushes 4, rotating so as to brush in the direction of motion of a strip 1, make contact with the strip immediately after the solution has been applied from spray pipes 5, a further spray being applied immediately after brushing. The bristles of the brushes, which may intermesh, should have a peripheral speed greater than the linear speed of the strip, and may make contact with the strip for one twentieth of the total coating time. The sheet and the coating solution should be brought into approximately the same temperature. Examples of phosphoric acid coating solutions are given, but the acid phosphates of zinc, manganese or iron may also be used.
