Phosphate coatings of 50-200 mgms. /sq. ft. are formed on electrogalvanised surfaces, e.g. steel, by treating with a zinc acid phosphate solution containing 0À001-0À02% wt. NO 3 ions. Preferred solutions contain 0À12-0À5% Zn, 0À5-2À2% PO 4 , 0À005-0À015% NO 3 , up to 0À036% Ni and total acidity 7À5-30 points. Preferred temperature is 38‹ -60‹ C. and contact time 2-45 secs. Coated product is water rinsed and then rinsed in aqeuous hexovalent Cr as CrO 3 ,
