Abstract
A lubricating coating is applied to wire by successively: (A) contacting clean, pickled, low carbon steel welding wire with an aqueous, coating solution containing from 1.6 to 3.8 g/litre of bivalent zinc ion, from 9.0 to 16.9 g/litre of orthophosphoric acid, and from 1.6 to 3.5 g/litre of chlorate ion, at a temperature from 38 DEG C to 66 DEG C to form a thin coating on the wire; (B) removing substantially all the excess of the coating solution from the surface of the coated wire; (C) contacting the coated wire with an aqueous solution containing an alkali metal salt of a C12-C20 fatty acid; and (D) removing the coated wire from the aqueous solution defined in step (C) and heating the coated wire at a temperature from 149 DEG C to 204 DEG C for at least five minutes. The coating can readily be removed by the reducing dies so that the drawn wire is suitable for use in welding without further treatment.
