Abstract
A phosphate coating is formed on a metal surface by brushing or spraying on to the surface an aqueous acidic solution of a coating phosphate containing at least 0.5% by weight of polyvinyl alcohol having a viscosity in 4% aqueous solution of at least 6 centipoises. Specified solutions for coating mild steel or zinc contain zinc oxide, phosphonic acid and nitric acid, together with sodium chlorate or nitroguanidine. The preferred solution for coating hot-dipped galvanized metal contains zinc oxide, phosphoric acid, nitric acid, nitroguanidine, nickel (as carborate or sulphate), and silicofluoride (as hydrofluosilicic acid or ammonium silicofluoride) Specification 673,638 is referred to.
