In a method of drawing hot-rolled carbon or alloy steels the work is descaled and subjected to a light drawing step before the application of an adherent oxalate, oxide, sulphide or phosphate coating for the main drawing steps. The work may be descaled mechanically or by pickling and for the light drawing step may be covered with lime, borax, alkali phosphate or soap solution or may have a thin coating of the same kind as the main coating of oxalate &c. to be applied for the final drawing stages.
