Abstract
583,963. Shock-absorbers. MILES AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and WOODHOUSE, J. W. Aug. 9, 1944, No. 15174. [Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A torsional shock absorber for aircraft undercarriages comprises two members connected by an intervening layer of elastic material, deformable under the landing load with relative movement of partial rotation between the two members. The shock absorber, shown applied to a tail wheel unit in Fig. 2, comprises elliptical inner and outer metal members 1a, 1b, with an intervening layer of natural or synthetic rubber 1c preferably bonded to both members. The outer member may be split at one or more points 10, in order that the rubber may be compressed when the unit is inserted into its housing in the mounting bracket 2.
