Abstract

582,782. Stuffing-box substitutes. FITZPATRICK, H. D. (Chicago Seal Co., Inc.). July 11, 1944, No. 13232. [Class 122 (v)] A shaft sealing device comprises a washer having in one face a recess containing a gasket 22 engaged by a stationary abutment 15, and on or near its other face a sealing face cooperating with a similar face on a spring pressed sleeve 28, the opposite end of which projects through a sealing element 32 carried by a socket 29 secured to the shaft whereby limited movement of the sleeve is permitted. The gasket 22 is initially in the form of a flat disc. In a modification the sealing face is formed on a separate bearing member seated on one face of a gasket carried by the ring 18 the opposite face of which bears on the stationary abutment.
