Abstract
582,183. Electron beam apparatus. BROADWAY, L. F., BARFORD, N. C., and PEARCE, A. F. June 25, 1943, No. 10353. [Class 39 (i)] In a circuit arrangement embodying a cathode 10 for generating an annular beam of electrons for example, for use in velocity - modulated apparatus, and having electrodes 12, 13, 15 and 16 arranged internally and externally of the beam, the electrodes are arranged to produce an inwardly-directed field which serves to prevent the outward spread of the beam which would otherwise be produced by the effect of space charge. In the example shown the field is set up by making electrode 12 shorter than electrode 13. It may, however, be effected by suitable displacement or shaping of any of the other electrodes or by an asymetrical shaping of the cathode. It may also be effected by varying the potential of the various electrodes.
