Abstract

581,547. Suction cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd. Sept. 12, 1944, No. 17375. Convention date, Sept 24, 1943. [Classes 8 (i) and 8 (ii)] In a suction cleaner comprising a fan 22, Fig. 1, a preliminary dirt separator 11, a final filter 33 and movable means for cleaning the filter and returning dirt therefrom to the preliminary separator, movement of the filter-cleaning device is derived from a turbine 51 driven by air from a suction-creating fan. The turbine-driving fan may be the main fan 22 but is preferably a second fan 38. The turbine 51 is mounted on a shaft 56 carrying a friction ring 58 adapted to engage a solenoid-operated spring-loaded friction wheel 61 which drives a wheel 69 mounted on a shaft 71. From the opposite end of the shaft a pinion 73 drives a gear 76 on a shaft 77 and meshes with a ring 79 to drive the filter-cleaning nozzle. The solenoid is operated by bellows 91 extended by back pressure set up by the dirt in the filter 33, which bellows also operates a second solenoid to close a flap valve 99 whereby the filter-cleaning nozzle is connected to the preliminary dirt separator.
