Abstract
581,118. Batteries. CHLORIDE ELECTRICAL STORAGE CO., Ltd., and JONES, H. C. April 13, 1945, No. 9272. [Class 53] An accumulator is provided with two lids between which is a sealing composition into which the outer lid is pressed, means being provided to connect the outer lid with the walls of the container so that any stresses applied to the outer lid are transmitted directly to the container walls and not to the sealed joints round the terminal posts &c. Such stresses may be produced when an accumulator is used in a miner's lamp and the lamp head is rotated for switching. Fig. 1 shows a two-cell accumulator in which each cell is.closed by a lid b carrying a vent c which communicates with the atmosphere through tube leading to an opening in the side of the container above the lid b. Intercell connections g are made above the lid b and the end terminal posts of the accumulator are connected by flexible leads to nuts i on contacts m carried by an outer lid k. The space between the lids b, k is filled with a bituminous or other sealing composition j into which the lid k is pressed while the composition is soft. The lid k is connected to the container walls by tongues n which fit into slots in the top of the walls as shown in plan in Fig. 3 and spaces may be left at the corners of the lid into which the sealing composition j may flow to help to retain the lid in position. The edges of the cut away portions of 'the lid may be bevelled as shown at q in Fig. 4. A filling opening is provided in the side of the container.
