Abstract

1,169,876. Packaging batteries. INSTANTLIGHT CORP. 24 Oct., 1966 [22 Oct., 1965], No. 47565/66. Heading B8C. [Also in Divisions F4 and H1] Power loss during storage of dry cells is avoided by enclosing the cells in a hermetically sealed container which may be evacuated or filled with moisture-free inert gas. The container can be converted into an electric battery lamp by removing an end closure and replacing it by a head in which is a lamp bulb and reflector with means for completing the circuit to the bulb. In one form, the metal container 10 includes insulating plates 21 between the batteries 18 and the ends of the container. A head 22 containing a bulb 30 mounted at the base of a reflector 28 is clipped to the lower end of the container. The mouth of the reflector is closed by a transparent plate 27. When the package is to be converted to an electric battery lamp one end of the container is removed, e.g. by peeling off a scaling strip 15 and the head 22 is mounted on the end. A conducting strip 31 connected to the shell of the bulb 30 extends towards the end of the contaner 10, which has two circumferenribs 35, 36. When the end of the head 22 is between the ribs contact between the base of the lamp and the battery branch 19 is broken. By moving the head so that its rim is below the lower rib 26, the base of the lamp is brought into contact with the terminal 29, the circuit between lamp and the case being completed by the strip 31. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the upper end of the container is closed by a sheet of resilient material such as polyethylene, latex or vinyl. Connection may be made with the cells within the container by terminals having needle-like projections which pierce the resilient material. The holes formed in the resilient material close when the projections are withdrawn so that the hermetic seal is not seriously impaired.
