Abstract

1,247,154. Closure of dry cells. C. K. PUN, and C.C. POON. 11 July, 1969 [24 July, 1968], No. 35369/68. Heading H1B. A dry cell comprising a cup-shaped electrode and a coaxial rod electrode is provided with a plug of electrically insulating plastics material mounted in the open end of the cup-electrode and gripped by its inturned rim and having a central hole accommodating the rod electrode, there being an enclosed annular space between the underside of the inturned rim and the edge of the plug and another between the inside of the hole and the rod electrode, both spaces being filled with sealing material. In one embodiment, Fig. 3, cup-electrode 1 is of Zn and rod electrode 2 of carbon; plug 7 is reinforced with radial ribs 11 and provided with apertures 22 to allow air circulation inside the cell and the outside of the cell is covered by metal sheet 20 and cardboard or plastics insulating member 19. In Fig. 1 (not shown), a cup-shaped spacer element (5) is shown at the bottom of the cell to prevent the depolarizer dolly 3 and the rod electrode from touching the cup electrode. The plug may be made to grip more tightly by making it too large with a hole too small. In a modification, metal contact cap 15 extends to the edge of the cell where it is insulatingly engaged to the rim of the cup electrode.
