Abstract

1,206,627. Storage cell having spiral electrodes and a combined vent and terminal. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 23 Nov., 1967 [30 Nov., 1966], No. 53456/67. Heading H1B. A sealed rechargeable cell, e.g. of the Ni-Cd type, comprises a tubular casing having one end closed by an integral wall 13 with a central opening 14 which is closed by a terminal and resealable vent unit 18, and the other end closed by a cap 16, an electrolyte within the casing, a battery coil having axially offset plates, resilient insulating spacers 50 and 51 between the ends of the coil and the ends of the casing, and means connecting one plate thereof to the terminal unit and means connecting the other plate between the cap and the casing. The cap may be sealed to the casing by a flange 22 peripherally welded to the casing at 24. The vent and terminal unit 18 comprises a rivet 38, as terminal, which secures two insulating washers 37 and 39 surrounding the opening on either side of the wall and an O-ring 44 inside the outer washer, against the wall 13, the O-ring acting as the resealable vent. The battery coil comprises positive and negative plates 26 and 28 spaced by a separator, the positive plate being offset towards the top of the cell and the negative towards the base, and the positive connector strap 32 being connected to the terminal unit, the negative to the cap and casing.
