Abstract

1365242 Electrochemical cells SAFT-SOC DES ACCUMULATEURS FIXES ET DE TRACTION 19 Oct 1972 [28 Oct 1971] 48276/72 Heading H1B An electrochemical cell comprises a container 2 in which are disposed spaced positive and negative electrodes which are wound to form a cylindrical electrode assembly 1, two current collectors 5 located one at each end of the assembly, each of which is connected to a respective electrode, and one of the collectors 5 is connected to an output terminal 3, psssing through the container wall, by a spiral-shaped member 6 which is resiliently deformable axially of the electrode assembly. The member 6, which as shown is a strip or band of sheet steel but which may comprise a spirally wound wire, Fig. 3 (not shown), has an apex which is spot welded to the terminal 3 and a base spot welded to collector 5. The arrangement enables the cell to withstand considerable vibration without damage and is particularly suitable in spacecraft or missile applications in which intense rotational vibrations may be set up. Both ends of the cell may be similarly constructed. The cell may be of the alkaline storage type with a positive pole of nickel hydroxide or silver oxide and a negative pole of cadmium oxide or hydroxide.
