Abstract
1,165,899. Venting electric cells. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc. 31 Oct., 1966 [3 Jan., 1966], No. 48628/66. Heading H1B. An electric cell consists of a container, positive and negative electrodes within the container, a cover closing the top of the container and having a hole in it, a cap having a vent in it over the hole and a seal within the cap and movable between a sealing position in which a surface of the seal is over the hole and a venting position, the seal being moved from the sealing position to the venting position under a predetermined pressure within the container and returning to the sealed position when the pressure is relieved. In Fig. 1, container 1 is a metal cylinder sealed by metal cover 3 and sealing material 11. The spiral electrode assembly 13 comprises a positive plate connected to cover 3 and a negative plate connected to container 1. Spacer 23 keeps the electrode assembly and the connector 21 in position. Gas may escape from the cell via hole 25 and vent 37 but is prevented from doing so by spider shaped spring 39 which has 3 legs pressing against the inside of cap 5 and a body pressing against the hole 25. The outside of the spring is covered in an elastomer. Figs. 4-6, 8 and 9 (not shown) illustrate alternative types of seal. The seal may simply be a piece of elastomer. Alternatively it may comprise a temperature compensating bimetallic strip. Instead of being through the cap, as shown, the vent 37 may be between the cap and the cover.
