[Class 74 (ii)] In excluding a yarn, for example, a splicing yarn 9, from the needles of a circular machine a tension or grip is applied to the yarn while it is still being knitted by the needles so that it breaks at or near a knitted loop and so that a loose end of visible length is not left on the fabric. The free end of yarn extending from the region of the grip floats along the line of needles in correct relationship to them. The yarn normally breaks over a sinker and one or more of the sinkers 4 may be given an additional or early forward movement by a notch wheel or other patterning device so as to crimp the yarn between the needles when the grip is applied to the yarn. The grip may be applied by the movement of the yarn guide 8 bringing the yarn 9 between the guide and a fixed member 13. In another arrangement, a movable gripping member is provided between the yarn guide and the needles. Alternatively, the gripping member may be arranged to grip the yarn as it passes through the yarn guide. The yarn guide may comprise a length of flexible tubing and the gripping may be obtained by squeezing the tube. The free end of yarn extending from the gripping means may be more positively fed to the needles either by associating it with a yarn already being knitted or by guiding it by the end of a flexible filament fed between the needles, or by directing an air blast on to it.
