[Class 95] Apparatus for applying adhesive to sheets comprises a sheet-engaging roll and a scraper extending lengthwise of the roll to define a valley to which adhesive is delivered, and trough structure engaging the respective ends of the roll and of the scraper on opposite sides of the valley and coextensive therewith for conducting adhesive from the valley. In Figs. 1 and 4 the roll 1 co-operates with an intermittently operated doctor roll 4. to define a valley V into which adhesive is discharged from pipe 5. The surface of roll 1 in passing through the adhesive in valley V received a thin coating transferred to wrappers W fed to roll 1 by rolls 2, 3 and deflected therefrom by knives 32 on to the conveyer 33. The excess of adhesive supplied to valley V is collected by troughs 6 and then flow downwardly through chutes 9, 9 of collector member 9a. Some of the adhesive escapes from openings 10 in chutes 9, 9 for discharge from troughs 12a spaced lengthwise of a second valley V1; the remainder of the adhesive reaches the common spout 12; thus the adhesive is discharged from member 9a into the valley V1 defined by roll 13 and scraper 14. When the frame 43 is swung away from position of Fig. 4 to the position of Fig. 1, for cleaning or inspection, the adhesive discharges from spout 12 directly into the detachable tray 11 instead of into valley V1. The roll 13 transfers adhesive from valley V1 to roll 15 which applies adhesive to tab face destined to engage sheets fed by rolls 2 and 3 into engagement with roll 1. The tabs are cut from strips by knives 44 associated with tabbing heads 45 adjustably supported by the frame 43. Referring to Figs. 1 and 4, while the knives 44 are in their upper position each of the tab strips is fed by a pair or rolls 46, 46 to extend beyond the path of the associated knife corresponding with the desired length of a tab; the leading end of the strip is directed by guide elements 49 into engagement with the the tub-coating roll 15. On downward movement of the knives to sever the tab strips, a tab is cut from the leading end of each strip and the pair of tabs so formed are carried by roll 15 toward roll 1 on to which they are guided by stripper blades 47. A water jacketed thermostatically controlled container 16 acts as a reservoir for the adhesive which is agitated by paddle 20, and connected via pump 51 to distributing head 5. A two-way valve 53 serves to connect the pump 51 with a source of cleaning liquid instead of with the reservoir 16, as so shows the machine to be cleaned.
