16 Claims. {CL 53-179) This invention relates to a wrapping or packaging machine and method, and one which is particularly desirable for use in wrapping or packaging food. The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a wrapping or packaging machine which will rapidly package a group of articles such, for example, as poultry giblets, so that the package may be inserted as such into the cavity of a dressed poultry carcass.
Second, to provide a wrapping or packaging machine which will economically produce a moist wrapped package such, for example, as giblets, that will not adhere to or absorb moisture from the carcass in which it is inserted.
Third, to provide a machine which may have these advantages which may be easily kept in a sanitary condition.
Fourth, to provide a wrapping or packaging machine which is well adapted for packaging products of irregular shape which are substantially sealed without the use of adhesive material other than water.
Fifth, to provide a machine of this character in which the packaged article may be of a selected group such, for example, as giblets, with the desired selections in each package.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent from a consideration of the following description and claims. The drawings, of which there are four sheets, illustrate a highly practical form of the invention.

The embodiment of my invention illustrated is especially designed for the wrapping or packaging of giblets, but is should be understood that the major features thereof are desirable for use in the packaging of various products. The machine illustrated includes a suitable framework of generally rectangular section designated generally by the numeral 1. In the machine illustrated, the front end of the machine, as viewed in FIG. l, is at the right and is provided with a support 2 for a roll 3 of wrapping paper. It will be understood that this paper may be varied in width, but for the wrapping of giblets, for example, a web of approximately one foot in width is suitable and it is of a type that does not disintegrate when moistened. For wrapping food products, care is taken that the paper is in a sanitary or uncontaminated condition.
The web guide roll 4 is mounted on the support 5 and directs the web of paper into the inlet end of the chute 6i. The former 7, supported by a cross piece or bridge 8 within the chute, forms the incoming web into an upwardly facing trough or channel section. The web is drawn or advanced into the chute past the forming means 7, by driven feed roll 9 which is in contact with the bottom or bight portion of the trough shaped web. The pressure roll 1d is swingably supported on the arms 11 and holds the web in supported and feeding engagement with the feed roll and holds the upturned sides of the web in upright position. At the rear of the roll 9 the web is picked up and advanced by a conveyor, that consisting of the three parallel belts 12 trained over the upper rolls 13 and 14 and the lower rolls 15 and 16 which form driving rolls and tightening means for these conveyor belts.
The roll 15 is driven `by the belt 17 from the transmission 18 of the drive unit 19. The rolls 13 and 14 are desirably slightly crowned to center the belt and are provided with annular ribs 20 and 21 which maintain the belts in properly spaced relation. The ribs 21 on the roll 14 project above the belts and serve to separate the web from the belts at the discharge end of this conveyor, as will be described presently.
At the rear or at the left of the roll 9 and projecting over the front ends of the belts 12 is a battle or chute mem-ber 22 which projects downwardly over the front of the belts and between the upwardly projecting sides of the web to discharge onto the bight portion of the Web. Supportedly mounted above the belts by the side rails 23 is a feed conveyor 24 of the chain and sprocket type, carried by sprocket shafts 25 and 26. The conveyor 24 is provided with a plurality of uniformly spaced outwardly facing cup-like receptacles adapted to receive the product to be packaged such, for example, as fowl giblets.
In the embodiment illustrated, inasmuch as the conveyor 24 is disposed above the conveyor previously described, the conveyor is operated so that its pans or receptacles 27 are advanced to the line on the upper reach of the conveyor by means of the ` drive belts 28 and 29 between the shaft of the roll 15 and the sprocket shaft 26. The drive for this feed conveyor is arranged to advance and discharge on the pan for every predetermined number of inches of the paper web which is being advanced `and positioned to receive the disch-arge. This means that the articles to be packaged are discharged in predetermined spaced relation on the Wrapping web.
When used for packaging giblets, for example, the operators standing along one or both sides of the machine deposit the giblets or other articles to be wrapped into the pan in the desired number and selection. To keep the giblets or other articles and scraps thereof dropped by the operators from falling into the conveyor, a removable catch pan is provided. This is supported by the lug 31 from the rolls 25 between the end reaches of the conveyor.
The conformed web of paper with the giblets or articles to be packaged thereon is engaged as it is translated by the folders 32 and 33, see FIG. 2, that fold the opposite or outwardly projecting sides of the trough shaped web laterally inwardly into overlapping relation. The wrapper so folded is indicated in somewhat exaggerated condition at W with a group of giblets indicated at G.
As stated, the embodiment of our invention illustrated is designed and adapted for the wrapping of giblets and the apparatus is provided with wetting means, preferably in the form of spraying means. In the accompanying drawing the water supply means is indicated at 34 and the water heater, if necessary, is indicated at 35. A
pipe 36 from the heater delivers to a jet or spray nozzle 37 that cleans each inverted pan 27 as it moves along the lower reach of the conveyor 24. In order to catch and prevent the drip and debris from the pans from working into the folds of the wrapper, an inclined drip pan 38 is supported under the lower reach of the conveyor and over the folding members 32 and 33. A drain hose 39 disposes of the drippings.
A branch 40 of the pipe 36 extends to a nozzle 41 positioned to spray just enough water on the surface 'of belts 12 to make them adhere to the dry incoming web of wrapping paper when they meet it at the roll 13. This permits the conveyor belts 12 to advance the web and the articles G without further separate drive on the web of paper. After passing the folders 32 and 33 the wrapper W and articles G are delivered over the roll 14 to the transfer plate 42, see FIG. 3, having a fixed knife blade 43 on its trailing or rear edge. The raised .ribs 21 on the roll 14 assure that the wet wrapper is separated from the roll onto the plate 42 and does not follow around the roll. A rotating knife blade 44 carried by the shaft 45 coacts with the blade 43 to sever the wrapper web into separate packages. The knife shaft 45 is supported in suitable bearings 46 and is driven in properly timed relation to the web W and conveyor 24 by the belts or chains 47 to cut the folded wrapper into equally spaced packages.
The severed and separate packages of articles are delivered from the knife 44 onto a delivery belt 48 trained over the rollers 49 and S0. The conveyor 48 desirably has a rough surface as indicated and is driven by the belt 51 and drive roll 52 at a somewhat faster rate than conveyor belts 12 so that the separate packages P of articles are spaced out on the belt. The packages P, and particularly the top folds thereo-f, are still relatively dry and loose so the conveyor 48 carries them immediately under a hood 53 having one or more spray nozzles 54 mounted therein and connected to the pipe 34 to spray or discharge downwardly upon the translated package and the conveyor 48. This moistening causes the overlapped folds of the wrapper to adhere closely to each other and to the bottom of the wrapper at the ends of the package. It also conditions the package so that it will not absorb moisture when the package is placed inside of a poultry carcass.
The moistened packages P are carried into the rolling hood 541 positioned over the conveyor 48. The top wall 55 of the hood supports a longitudinally arranged series of depending bolts 56 which are secured at their lower ends to a relatively stilf but yieldably exible material 57 such as a section of the conveyor belting 48. The top wall 55 is inclined longitudinally so the material 57 is inclined in rearwardly converging relation to the conveyor 48 and forms a roll forming stop. Springs 58 yieldably bias the front end of the flexible stop downwardly and the remainder of the stop is weight biased downwardly.
As shown in FIG. 4, the top of each package P of articles strikes the under side of the stop 57 while being advanced to the left by the conveyor 48. The roughened face of the conveyor 48 and the moistened condition of the package P causes the bottom of the package to continue in a rolling motion under the stop 57. The initially leading end 581 of the package is pulled up and rolled over the top of the package while the trailing end 59 continues longitudinally and is rolled under the now rolling package. The ends 581 and 59 are thus rolled in rolling trailing fashion around the rolled package and the moistened condition of the wrapper causes the ends 581 and 59 to adhere to the package with suicient force to permit the packages to be handled.
The term belts has been used in describing certain driving means and connections but it should be understood that chain drives are commonly used as avoiding slippage.
As stated, we have illustrated our invention in an embodiment adapted for the wrapping of giblets and which greatly expedites the packaging of giblets, and they are packaged so that they do not absorb moisture from the carcass into which they are inserted. It is desired to point out, however, that our invention is readily adapted to the packaging of various products. We have not illustrated or described such embodiments or adaptations as it is believed that the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to adapt or embody our invention for the particular purpose or packaging of particular objects as desired.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and is desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A wrapping machine comprising a paper web feed means including a feed roll and means coacting therewith to form the web into trough like cross section, a web receiving conveyor comprising spaced parallel belts arranged to receive said trough formed web from said feed means, a tray conveyor positioned above said receiving conveyor and driven in timed relation thereto and having spaced trays thereon and which face upwardly on its upper reach which travels in opposite direction to that of the upper reach of said receiving conveyor, guide means at the discharge end of said tray conveyor for directing the contents of said trays in spaced relation into said trough, a rst sprayer positioned to wet the web engaging surfaces of said receiving conveyor belts, a second sprayer positioned to flush the inverted trays on the return reach of said tray conveyor, a drip pan positioned under said tray conveyor to catch the drippings from the sprayed trays and the discharge of said second sprayer, blades positioned at the rear of said tray discharge guide means to fold the sides of said web over the articles spacedly positioned thereon, a transfer table positioned at the end of said receiving conveyor to receive the so folded web from the receiving conveyor, a fixed knife on said transfer table, a coacting movable knife driven in timed relation to said web to sever said folded web between said articles thereon, a delivery belt having a roughened face driven at a speed exceeding that of said receiving conveyor and advancing the severed packages, a third sprayer positioned over said delivery conveyor and operative to moisten the folded packages translated thereon, to facilitate the adhering of overlapping portions of the wrapper, and a package rolling member consisting of a yieldable stop positioned over said delivery conveyor at the rear of said third sprayer and in spaced rearwardly converging relation to said delivery conveyor, said package rolling member including a length of roughened faced flexible material and being yieldably biased downwardly at its forward end to engage the tops of packages on said delivery belt and cause the packages to roll relative to the delivery conveyor.
2. A wrapping machine comprising a paper web feedmeans including a feed roll and means coacting therewith to form the web into trough like cross section, a web receiving conveyor comprising spaced parallel belts arranged to receive said trough formed web from said feed means, a tray conveyor positioned above said receiving conveyor and driven in timed relation thereto and having spaced trays thereon and which face upwardly on its upper reach, guide means at the discharge end Vof said tray conveyor for directing the contents of said trays in spaced relation into said trough, a first sprayer positioned to wet the web engaging surfaces of said receiving conveyor belts, a second sprayer positioned to ush the `inverted trays on the return reach of said tray conveyor, a drip pan positioned under said tray conveyor to catch the drippings from the sprayed trays and the discharge of said second sprayer, blades posi- -tioned at the rear of saidtray discharge guide means to fold the sides of said web over the articles spacedly positioned thereon, a transfer table positioned at the end of said receiving conveyor to receive the so folded web from the receiving conveyor, a fixed knife on said transfer table, a coacting movable knife driven in timed relation to said web to sever said folded web between said articles thereon, a delivery belt having a roughened face driven at a speed exceeding that of said receiving conveyor and advancing the severed packages, a third sprayer positioned over said delivery conveyor and operative to moisten the folded packages translated thereon to facilitate the adhering of overlapping portions of the wrapper, and a package rolling member positioned over said delivery conveyor at the rear of said third sprayer and in spaced rearwardly converging relation to said delivery conveyor to engage the tops of packages on said delivery belt and cause the packages to roll relative to the delivery conveyor.
3. A wrapping machine comprising a paper web feed means including a feed roll and means coacting therewith to form the web into trough like cross section, a web receiving conveyor comprising spaced parallel belts arranged to receive said trough formed web from said feed means, a tray conveyor positioned above said receiving conveyor and driven in timed relation thereto and having spaced trays thereon and which face upwardly on its upper reach, guide means at the discharge end of said tray conveyor for directing the contents of said trays in spaced relation into said trough, a first sprayer positioned to wet the web engaging surfaces of said receiving conveyor belts, a second sprayer positioned to flush the inverted trays on the return reach of said tray conveyor, a drip pan positioned under said tray conveyor to catch the drippings from the sprayed trays and the discharge of said second sprayer, blades positioned at the rear of said tray discharge guide means to fold the sides of said web over the articles spacedly positioned thereon, a transfer table positioned at the end of said receiving conveyor to receive the so folded web from the receiving conveyor, the conveyor roll at the end of said receiving conveyor having raised web supporting ribs, a fixed knife on said transfer table, a coacting movable knife driven in timed relation to said web to sever said folded webi between said articles thereon, a delivery belt having a roughened face driven at a speed exceeding that of said receiving conveyor and advancing the severed packages, a third sprayer positioned over said delivery conveyor and operative to moisten the folded packages translated -thereon to facilitate the adhering of overlapping portions of the wrapper, and a package rolling member positioned over said delivery conveyor at the rear of said third sprayer and in spaced rearwardly converging relation to said delivery conveyor, to engage the tops of packages on said delivery belt and cause the packages to roll relative to the delivery conveyor.
4. A wrapping machine comprising a paper web feed means and means to form the web into trough like cross section, a web receiving conveyor arranged to receive said trough formed web from said feed means, a tray conveyor positioned above said receiving conveyor and driven in timed relation thereto and having spaced trays thereon and which face upwardly on its upper reach and discharging the contents of the trays in spaced relation into said trough, `a rst sprayer positioned to wet the web engaging surface of said receiving conveyor, a second sprayer positioned to ush the inverted trays on the return reach of said tray conveyor, a drip pan positioned under said tray conveyor to catch the drippings from the sprayed trays and the discharge of said second sprayer, guide mea-ns at the discharge end of said tray conveyor for directing the contents of the trays in spaced relation into said trough blades positioned at the rear of said tray conveyor for folding the upstanding sides of said web over the articles spacedly positioned thereon, a transfer means positioned at the end of said receiving conveyor to receive the so folded -web from the receiving conveyor, cutter means operatively associated with transfer means driven in timed relation to advance of said web conveyor to sever said folded web between said articles spacedly positioned thereon, a delivery conveyor disposed to receive such severed sections driven at a speed exceeding that of said receiving conveyor and advancing the severed packages, a third sprayer operative to moisten the lfolded packages translated by said delivery conveyor to facilitate the adhering of overlapping portions of the wrapper, and a package rolling member positioned above said delivery conveyor at the rear of said third sprayer and in rearwardly converging relation to said delivery conveyor.
5. A wrapping machine comprising a paper web feed means and means to form the web into trough like cross section, a web receiving conveyor arranged to receive said trough formed web from said feed means, a tray conveyor positioned above said receiving conveyor and driven in timed relation thereto -and having spaced trays thereon and which face upwardly on its upper reach and discharging the contents of the trays in spaced relation into said trough, means positioned at the rear of said tray conveyor for folding the upstanding sides of said web over the articles spacedly positioned thereon, a transfer means positioned at the end of said receiving conveyor to receive the so folded web from the receiving conveyor, cutter means operatively associated with transfer means driven in timed relation to advance of said web conveyor to sever said folded web between said articles spacedly positioned thereon, a delivery conveyor disposed to receive such severed sections driven at a Speed exceeding that of said receiving conveyor and advancing the severed packages, a sprayer operative to moisten the folded packages translated by said delivery conveyor to facilitate the adhering of overlapping portions -of the wrapper, and a package rolling member positioned above said delivery conveyor at the rear of said sprayer and in rearwardly converging relation to said delivery conveyor.
6. A Wrapping machine comprising a paper web feed means and means to form the web into trough like cross section, a web receiving conveyor arranged to receive said trough formed web from said feed means, a tray conveyor positioned above said receiving conveyor and driven in timed relation thereto and having spaced trays thereon and which face upwardly on its upper reach and discharging the contents of the trays in spaced relation into said trough, means positioned at the rear of said tray conveyor for folding the upstanding sides of said web over the articles spacedly positioned thereon, a transfer means positioned at the `end of said receiving conveyor to receive the so folded web from the receiving conveyor, cutter means operatively associated with transfer means `driven in timed relation to advance of said web conveyor to sever said folded web between said articles spacedly positioned thereon, a delivery conveyor disposed to receive such severed sections driven at a speed exceeding that of said receiving conveyor and advancing the severed packages, and a package rolling member positioned above said delivery conveyor -and in rearwardly converging relation to said delivery conveyor.
7. A Wrapping machine comprising a paper web feed means and means to form the web into trough like cross section, a web receiving conveyor arranged to receive trough formed web from said feed means, a tray conveyor positioned above said receiving conveyor and driven in timed relation thereto and having spaced trays thereon and which face upwardly on its upper reach and discharging the contents of the trays in spaced relation into said trough, means positioned at the rear of said tray conveyor for folding the upstanding sides of said web over the articles spacedly positioned thereon, a transfer means positioned at the end of said receiving conveyor to receive the so folded web from the receiving conveyor, cutter means operatively associated with transfer means driven in timed relation to advance of said web conveyor to sever said folded web between said articles spacedly positioned thereon, a delivery conveyor disposed to receive such severed sections and having a ronghened facedriven at 'a speed exceeding that of said receiving conveyor and advancing the severed packages, and a package rolling member comprising a yieldable stop positioned above said delivery conveyor and in rearwardly converging relation to said delivery conveyor, said package rolling member including a length of roughened faced exible material and being yiedably biased downwardly at its forward end to engage the tops of packages on said delivery conveyor and cause the packages to roll relative to the delivery conveyor.
8. A wrapping machine comprising a paper web feed means and means for forming the web into an upwardly facing trough-like cross section, a web conveyor disposed to receive and translate said so formed web, means for positioning articles to be wrapped in spaced relation on said formed web, folders positioned to fold the upstanding side portions of the web over articles positioned therein and into overlapping relation to each other, a transfer means for the so folded web disposed at the rear end of said web conveyor, cutter means operatively associated with said transfer means and driven in timed relation thereto to sever the folded web 'between the articles spacedly positioned thereo-n, a delivery conveyor disposed to receive and translate the severed sections, a sprayer positioned to discharge upon the folded packages translated by said delivery conveyor to facilitate the adhering of the overlapped portions of the Wrapper, a package rolling means comprising a yieldable stop member positioned above said delivery conveyor at the rear of said sprayer and in rearwardly converging relation to said delivery conveyor whereby a rolling movement is imparted to the packages While being translated by said delivery conveyor.
9. A wrapping machine comprising a paper web feed means and means for forming the web into an upwardly facing trough-like cross section, a web conveyor disposed to receive and translate said so formed web, means for positioning articles to be wrapped in spaced relation on said formed web, folders positioned to fold the upstanding side portions of the web over articles positioned therein and into overlapping relation to each other, a transfer ymeans for the so folded web disposed fat the rear end of said web conveyor, cutter means operatively associated with said transfer means and driven in timed relation thereto to sever the folded web between the articles spacedly positioned thereon, a delivery conveyor disposed to receive and translate the severed sections, a package rolling means comprising a yieldable stop member positioned above said delivery conveyor in rearwardly converging relation to said delivery conveyor whereby a rolling movement is imparted to the packages while being translated by said delivery conveyor.
10. A wrapping machine comprising a paper web feed means and means for forming the web into an upwardly facing trough-like cross section, a web conveyor disposed to receive and translate said so formed web, means for positioning articles to be wrapped in spaced relation on said formed web, folders positioned to fold the upstanding side portions of the web over articles positioned therein and into overlapping relation to each other, a transfer means for the so Ifolded web disposed at the rear end of said web conveyor, cutter means operatively associated with said transfer means and driven in timed relation thereto to sever the folded web between the articles spacedly positioned thereon, a delivery conveyor disposed to receive -and translate the severed section, a sprayer positioned to discharge upon the folded packages translated by said delivery conveyor to facilitate the adhering of the overlapped portions of the wrapper, a package rolling means positioned above said delivery conveyor in rearwardly converging relation to said delivery conveyor whereby a rolling movement is imparted to the packages while being translated by said delivery conveyor.
11.. A wrapping machine comprising a paper web feed means and means for forming the web into an upwardly facing trough-like cross sectiton, a web conveyor disposed to receive and translate said so formed web, means for positioning articles to be wrapped in spaced relation on said formed web, folders positioned to fold the upstanding side portions of the web over articles positioned therein and into overlapping relation to each other, a transfer means for the so folded web disposed at the rear end of said web conveyor, cutter means operatively associated with said transfer means and driven in timed relation thereto to sever the folded webl between the articles spacedly positioned thereon, a delivery conveyor disposed to receive and translate the severed sections, a package rolling means positioned above said delivery conveyor in rearwardly converging relation to said delivery conveyor whereby a rolling movement is imparted to the packages while being translated by said delivery conveyor.
l2. A packaging machine comprising means for forming a web of paper into a trough like form, a web conveyor disposed to receive and translate .said so formed web, means for depositing groups of material to be wrapped in longitudinally spaced relation upon said web between the npturned portions thereof and thereafter folding the web to position its edges in overlapping relation and over the articles deposited thereon, a second conveyor disposed at the rear of said first conveyor and driven at a speed exceeding that of said ilrst conveyor, means between said conveyors for severing said web between the articles deposited thereon, means positioned relative to said second conveyor to moisten the overlapped portions of said web to facilitate adhering thereof when placed together, and means engageable with the packages at the rear of said moistening position and c0- acting with said second conveyor to roll the mostened package longitudinally of the overlapping portions thereof.
13. A packaging machine comprising means for forming a web of pape-r linto a trough like form, a web conveyor disposed to receive and translate said so formed web, means for depositing groups of material to be Wrapped in longitudinally spaced relation upon said web between the upturned portions thereof and thereafter folding the web to position its edges in overlapping relation and over the articles deposited thereon, a second conveyor disposed at the rear of said first conveyor and driven at a speed exceeding that of said first conveyor, means between said conveyors for severing said web between the articles -deposited thereon, and means engageable with the packages and coacting with said second conveyor to roll the packages longitudinally of the overlapping portions thereof.
14. A packaging machine comprising means for translating and forming a web of paper into a trough-like cross section and to supportedly receive and translate articles positioned in longitudinally spaced relation between the upturned side portions thereof, rneans for folding the side portions of the web into overlapping relation to each other and over the articles spacedly postioned thereon and translated thereby, a conveyor disposed at the rear of said web folding means and driven at a speed exceeding that of said web translating means, means between said folding means and said conveyor `for severing the so folded web between the articles positioned thereon, and means engageable with the so formed packages and coacting with said conveyor to roll the packages longitudinally of the overlapping portions of the web with said overlapping portions positioned inward-ly.
15. A packaging machine comprising means for translating land forming a web of paper into a trough-like cross section and to supportedly receive and translate articles positioned in longitudinally spaced relation between the upturned side portions thereof, means for folding the side portions of the web into overlapping relation to each other and over the articles spacedly positioned thereon and translated thereby, a conveyor disposed at the rear .of
said web folding means, means between said folding means and said conveyor Ifor severing the so i-folded web between the articles positioned thereon, and means engageable with the so formed packages and coacti-ng with said conveyor to roll the packages longitudinally of the overlapping portions of the web with said overlapping portions positioned inwardly.
16. A packaging machine comprising means `for translating and forming a web of paper into a trough-like cross section and to supportedly receive and translate articles positioned in longitudinally spaced relation between the upturned side portions thereof, means for folding the side portions of the web into overlapping relation to each other and over the yarticles spacedly positioned thereon `and translated thereby, Ia conveyor disposed at the rear of said web folding means, means between said folding means and said conveyor for severing the so folded web between the articles positioned thereon, means for moistening the overlapping portions of said web sections,
10 and means engageable with the so formed packages at the rear of said moistening means and coacting with said conveyor to roll the moistened package longitudinally of the overlapping portions ofthe web with said overlapping portions positioned inwardly.
