This invention relates to a device for pasting and trimmin wallpaper.

A principal object of the invention is to provide a device of the type described, that will receive a roll of wallpaper, apply paste to one side thereof in the proper consistency, and trim one or both edges of the paper.

Other objects will appear to those skilled in the art from a reading of the following specification.

The accompanying drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is understood that modifications may be made therein without departing from th spirit of the invention as hereinafter claimed.

Figure 1 represents a plan view of the complete device, without wallpaper, ready for operation.

Figure 2 is a front elevation of the structure shown in Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a vertical section, on an enlarged scale, of a portion line 3-3 of Figure 1.

Figure 4 is a side elevation of the means for mounting the roll of Wallpaper.

Figure 5 is a front elevation of a mechanism for wiping the wallpaper after paste has been applied thereto.

The device is usable on a table ID, which is supported on foldable horses A wooden frame |2, open at the rear and at the top, is adapted to hold a paste pan M. The pan l4 has a handle IE to facilitate sliding of the pan 4 into and out of the frame l2. The pan l4 contains a saucer-shaped member 8 adapted to hold liquid paste and fastened at its upper periphery to the upper periphery of the pan I4. The transverse sides of the pan l4 are provided with slotted elevation, similar to Figure device in inoperative posi or for other purposes.

A roll of paper 2| is adapted to be held by two short horizontal holders 22 and 23. These holders 22 and 23 are carried on arms 24 and 26, respectively, which are pivoted on a horizontal shaft 21 mounted on the top of the front end of the frame I 2. The pivoting of the arms 24 and 26 will take care of diminution in size of the roll of paper 2| as it is consumed. One of the arms of the device, taken along the 26 has a spring mountin 23 on the frame I2 to permit it to move resiliently along the shaft 21, for the purpose of accommodating varying widths of paper 2 Pivotally mounted on each side of the frame |2-, by means of a hinge 3|, is a bracket 32. When the bracket 32 is down in contact with the frame provided with a pulley M and a crank 42, for purposes to be described more fully hereinafter.

It will be observed from Figure 3 of the drawings that the paper 2| is adapted to be passed of fingers 60, bracket 32, project between the and the trimmer roll 40 so as to the paper 2 A wiper arm 62, pivoted to the sides of the bracket 32, is designed to bear against the paper 2| while it rotates with the trimmer r011 40 to wipe off excess paste. The wiper 62 has an anular extension 63, which is movable by means of an adjusting screw 64 to control the spacing between the wiper 62 and the paper 2|, and consequently the thickness of the coat of paste to be borne by the paper 2|. Two or more guide rollers rear ends to the pasting roll 20 catch and guide 66 are mounted on resilient arms 61, which are secured to the upper pan member I8 and project between the fingers 60 to hold the paper 21 on the trimmer roll 40 so as to come into wiping contact with the wiper $2.

The front portion of each side of the bracket 32 is provided with an enlargement 10, to which are pivotally attached a series of lugs H. A bar 12 is longitudinally slidable in each lug H, and may be locked therein by means of a set-screw 13. The bars 12 constitute a grating for the purpose of supporting the pasted paper 21 after it leaves the trimmer roll 40. At the same time, the gratin 12 will permit observation of the paper 2| as it unrolls from the holders 22 and 23. The grating 12 may have any desired shape, and is shown downwardly curved in Figures 2. 3, and 6 of the drawings.

One side of the frame 12 is provided with two pulleys 80 and 8|, and the front end of the table In is also provided with a pulley 83. An endless rope 85 is snugly fitted over the pulleys 80, Si, and 83, and over the pulley M of the bracket 32. It will be obvious that as the top of the rope 85 is pulled toward the left, as viewed in Figures 1, 2, and 6, the pasted paper will travel as indicated by the arrows in Figure 3 and move off the grating I2 onto the top of the table ill, with the pasted surface of the paper 2i on top.

In the operation of the device, the upper pan member I8 is filled with paste. The brackets 32 and their associated elements are moved clockwise to the position shown in Figures 2 and 3, and locked by means of the catch 34. For further security, one or more barrel bolts 90 may secure the pan it to the frame 12 and to the table 10. A roll of paper 21 is positioned on the holders 22 and 23. The end of the paper 2| is then manually fed over the pastin roll 20, under the trimmer roll 33, and around and under the knives 50. This manipulation is facilitated by the crank 42 on the trimmer roll shaft 38. As the paper 21 travels across the pasting roll 20, it will of course receive a coating of paste from the rotating pasting roll 20.

After the paper 21 has been properly started, it

is only necessary to pull the rope 85 as hereinbefore mentioned, and the pasted paper can be withdrawn with one hand from the top of the grating 12. The paper 2! will have been properly wiped and trimmed, and will be ready for hanging.

Since the pasted side of the paper 2! will be uppermost, there will be no mess on the top of the table 10. The pasted paper can be cut transversely by any well known means.

What is claimed is:

A wall paper pasting and trimming machine comprising a hollow, rectangular frame, a past receptacle removably secured in said frame, a pasting roller journaled at its ends in said frame in position to be partly submerged in paste contained in said receptacle, paper roll supporting means pivotally connected to the front end of said frame to support a paper roll contiguous and substantially parallel to said pasting roller at the front side of the latter, said supporting means being adjustable to receive rolls of paper of different widths, a bracket pivotally secured at its rear end to the rear end of said frame and movable between an operative position in which it rests upon the top edge of said frame and an inoperative position in which it extends upwardly from said frame substantially perpendicular to said top edge, said bracket having two spaced apart sides disposed one at each side of said frame, a trimming roller journaled in said bracket and disposed to the rear of said pasting roller and substantially parallel to the latter when said bracket is in its operative position, a trimming knife supporting arm mounted on said bracket, a trimming knife journaled on said arm and peripherally contasting said trimming roller, a plurality of spaced fingers secured to said bracket and underlying said trimming roller to guide the paper from said pasting roller onto said trimming roller, a plurality of spaced apart, curved bars pivotally connected to the front end of said bracket to overlie a paper roll supported on the front side of said frame and guide pasted paper from said trimming roller over to said paper roll, and manually operated means connected to said trimming roller for rotating the latter to move paper from said paper roll over said pasting roller and said trimming roller, said bracket being movable from its operative to its inoperative position to expose said paper roll support, said pasting roller and said trimming roller for replenishment of paper on said support, cleaning of said pasting roller and said trimming roller and for removal of said pasting roller and said paste receptacle from said frame.
