DANIEL E. LILLY, OF MOUNT HOPE, WEST VIRGINIA.
TRIMIVITNG AND PASTING' MACHINE.
Application filed October 3, 1921.. Serial No. 505,078.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANrnL E. LILLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at of Fayette and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trimming and Pasting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for trimming wall paper and for applying paste thereto, the general object of the invention being to provide means for trimming one edge of the paper and applying paste to the rear face thereof as the paper is drawn through the machine so that the paper is ready to be applied after it leaves the machine.
Another object of the invention is to make the cutting means adjustable so as to suit different widths of paper.
A further object of the invention is to construct the device of a small number of parts so that it can be manufactured to sell at low cost and the operation of which will be very simple.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention with the parts carrying the cutting means in raised position.
Figure 2 is a side view.
Figure 8 is a longitudinal sectional view. I Figure 4 is an elevation of the frame 9 Figure 5 is a side view thereof.
Figure 6 is a view of the cutting member Figure 7 is a sectional view of the roller 12.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the brush.
Figure 9 is a view of the basket.
In these views 1 indicates a table and 2 an extension thereof, the table and extension being supported by the uprights 3 which are provided with casters 4 so that the device can be easily rolledfrom one part of the room to another. One edge of the table and its extension are provided with a ruler 5 so that the paper can be cut off in desired lengths. A paste receptacle 6 is placed under the table top, said receptacle having its bottom sloping from the ends to as shown at 7, and a roller 8 extends across the receptacle at the center so as to pick up the paste as said roller is rotated; A frame 9 is hinged to the outer 'end of the table, as at 10, said frame carrying the small roller 11 at its inner end and a larger roller 12 midway its end, these rollers 11 and 12 being arranged to be located on each side of the roller 8 when the frame is swung downwardly. The roller 12 is adjustable length wise in the frame by means of the set screw 13 and at one end of this roller a circular knife 14 is secured to the shaft and roller. A small roller 15 is secured to the shaft of the roller beyond the knife for preventing the strip cut from the paper from entering the paste receptacle. A bracket 16 is connected'with the frame 9 anda shaft 17 is journaled in the end of this bracket and carries a circular knife 18 which is held pressed against the knife 14 by the spring 19. The knives 14 and scissors cut to the paper. Bracket 16 has its outer part adjustable as shown so that the knife 17 can be adjusted in relation to the knife 14:. The roll of paper 20 is placed on shaft 21 which is suitably supported by the table adjacent the paste receptacle and in front'of the roller 11. The paper ispassed under roller 11, over roller, 8 and around roller 12 and is adapted to be pulled over the top of the table and its extension. This action will cause the rolls to rotate .and the frictional engagement of the knives with the paper and with each other will cause them to rotate so as to shear a strip off one edge of "the paper. By moving the set screw 13 the knives can be adjusted to cut the paper at the proper point. The small roller 15 acts to prevent the paper strip from entering the paste receptacle. The rotation of the rollers by the paper will also apply paste to the rear face of the paper and surplus paste is removed from the paper and the re maining paste evenly spread thereover by the brush 22 which is adjustably supported 17 are arranged to give a the center, I
by the-table and engages the paper as it rollers in the same. The swinging of frame 9 upwardly will also facilitate the filling of the paste pot and the placing of a new roll of paper in position.
1 also place a basket 24L under the table which is adapted to hold the rolls of paper and this basket has a protruding part for receiving the paper strip.
The paste roller may be covered with cloth or the like so as to facilitate it picking up the paste. Roller 12 is shorter than roller 8.
Fronrt'he above it will be seen that after the paper has been passed over the roller it is simply necessary to pull out the desired length of paper, which can be measured by the ruler on the table, and this length will be both trimmed and applied with paste so that it is ready to be placed on the wall. The parts can be adjusted to suit paper of different lengths and there are no gears used as the parts are rotated by friction. By having the upper rollers and one of the knives on a hinged frame these parts can be swung out of the way to facilitate the placing of the paper in position.
I may place a similar assembly of cutting parts at the other side of the device so that both edges of the paper can be trimmed. This'is necessary in butt oint work.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will. be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is l. A device of the class described com prising a support, a paste pot thereon, a paste roller extending over the pot, a hinged frame, guiding rollers carried thereby for guiding the paper over the pasting roller when the frame is in lowered position and cutting means associated with one of the guiding rollers.
' 2. A. device of the class described compris ing a support, a paste pot thereon, a paste roller extending over the pot, a hinged frame, guiding rollers carried thereby for guiding the paper over the pasting roller when the frame is in lowered position and cutting means associated with one of the guiding rollers, such means consisting of a knife on one of the guiding rollers and a second knife carried by the frame.
3. A device of the class described comprising a support, a paste pot thereon, a paste roller extending over the pot, a hinged frame, guiding rollers carried thereby for guiding the paper over the pasting roller when the frame is in lowered position, cutting means associated with one of the guiding rollers, such means consisting of a knife on one of the guiding rollers and a second knife carried by the frame and spring means for holding the knives together.
4. A device of the class described comprising a table, a paste pot carried thereby, a pasting roller extending across the pot, a frame pivoted to the table, a pair of guiding rollers carried by the frame for guiding the paper over the pasting roller, a circular knife carried by one of the guiding rollers, a bracket connected with the hinged frame, a second knife carried by the bracket and overlapping the first knife, and spring means for holding the knives together.
5. A device of the class described comprising a table, a paste pot carried thereby. a pasting roller extending across the pot, a frame pivoted to the table, a pair of guiding rollers carried by the frame for guiding the paper over the pasting roller, a circular knife carried by one of the guiding rollers. a bracket connected with the hinged frame, a second knife carried by the bracket and overlapping the first knife, spring means for holding the knives together and means for adjusting the guiding roller and the knife which is associated therewith to suit different lengths of paper.
6. A device-of the class described comprising a table, a paste pot carried thereby, a
pasting roller in said pot, a frame hinged to the table, guiding rollers carried by the frai'i'i e for guiding the paper over the pasting roller. means for supporting a roll of paper adjacent the paste pot, a brush associated with one of the guiding rollers for removing the surplus paste from the paper and distributing the paste over the paper and knives asriiix'iiated with the said guiding roller.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
