WALL-PAP-ER-HNGpING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,436, dated February 20, 1883.
' Application filed January 8, 1883. (No model.) V
To all whom it may conce-rn Be it known that l, MATTHEW HEFFER- NAN, .of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State oi' Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Wall-Paper-Hanging Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for hanging wall-paper direct from the roll; and it consists of a frame arranged to hold a roll ot' wallpaper in such a manner that by holding and carrying the device along andy down against the wall the paper is pasted, unrolled, and applied to the wall, said device being constructed and operated as hereinafter described and claimed.
1n the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my wallpaper-hanging device. Fig. 2 is a front or plan view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section.
A is a box made to contain a quantity ofA paste, and supportsthe operating parts of the device. B B are two pasting-rollers located in the lower part of said box.A They are composed of wood, and have a covering of woolen or similar fabric suitable for saturation and for applying paste to the paper' yas it passes over them. Over the said rollers B is placed a third roller, C, for pressing the paper against the said rollers B in its passage over them. The said rollerO is removable, its journals being set in bearings in the edge of the frame A,
and covered by pivoted pieces c c, which may be turned to allow the roller to be lifted out. At the upper corners of thev box are arms d d, having bearings for carrying a roller, D,em ployed to apply the paper to the wall. This roll also has a covering of Woolen fabric, forming a cushion for pressing the paper down closely to the Wall, and is thus adapted to yield to any unevenness of the surface of the wall.V One journal of the roller D projects through the bearing, and is provided with a pulley, as also are both of the rollers B B. A belt, E, connects said pulleys, being crossed to revolve the paste-rollers in the same direction with the roller D. To the lower cornersgof the box vided with a revolving disk, G, the insideiace of which has a cone, g, the purpose of which is to enter the ends of the roll of paper P and support it in place in the machine. In placing theroll of paper the spring-arms are sprung apart sufficiently to admit the roll. Across the upper edge of the box is made a narrow slot, s, and above said slot is arranged a ne wire, lw, secured at one end to one side ofthe box, the other passing out through the said slot, and provided with aring orknob, k. This wire is intended for cutting off the paper from the roll. a suitable handle, h, for operating the device. The box A' has a cover, a, removably placed over the paste-receptacle, with its lower edge resting against the upper paste-roller B, which serves to scrape'off any excess of paste that the saidv roll may take up.
The operation of this device is as follows: TheV wall-paper being placed in the machine, as seen in the drawings, the machine is held in the position seen in'Fig. 1, with the upper end of the paper against the wall. with the rollerDvpressin g it down. Then by drawing or carrying the machine downward the paper is unrolled, drawn over the paste-rollers, and applied to the wall. When the machine has been carried down to the lowest point required the applied paper is cut or severed by grasping the ring -or knob k and drawing the wire w through the paper and slot.
Having described my invention, I claim- The box A,provided with the paste-rollers B B, rollers O and D, the journals of rollers D and B B having pulleys and connected by belt E, the spring-arms F F, having the revolvin g disks G G for holding the roll of paper P, the wire fw, and the slot s, for severing the paper from the roll, all constructed, combined andoperating substantially as described.
MATTHEW HEFFEBNAN.
