tress, as illustrated in Figure 3 of the draw ings. The gear 12 is then rotated to actuate the frame 17, the rods 21 and mattress, thus wrapping the paper around the rods and the mattress. \Vhen the said mattress has been sufficiently wrapped, the pedal 36 is pressed down to actuate the glue applicator 28 which is raised out of the liquid glue and presses against the underside of the sheet of paper 8, to simultaneously press the cutter or knife 31 in the U-shaped member 32, thus cutting The operator then presses the glued end against the paper al ready wound on the mattress, to secure the end in place. The arm 24: is then swung outwardly, and the roll is removed by sliding it endwise out of engagement with the rod 21.
A main object of the machine above described. is to economize in wrapping paper, and time and labor is saved by auton'iatically and simultaneously placing a coat of glue and cutting the paper. Another feature. in the present invention, is that the wrapping paper is always at hand, in front of the machine, where the operator stands, thus saving considerable time, in selecting the different sizes of paper, to suit the dill'erent sizes of mattresses.
It will be readily understood, that the machine described in the foregoing specification discloses one preferred form of the invention, and any alte'atioi'is and modiliem tions may be made, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What we claim as our invention is l. A machine for wrapping mattresses comprising a table for supporting a mattress in rolled condition, means positioned above said table for clamping the rolled mattress to prevent the unrolling thereof, means for rotating the clamping means and the maltress clamped thereby, the said clamping means being adapted to secure one end of a strip of wrapping paper whereby the paper will be drawn about the mattress and the clamping means by the rotation of the clamping means.
2. A machine for wrapping mattresses or similar articles having in combination a table for supporting a mattress in a rolled condition, means for supporting a roll of wrapping paper adjacent to said table, means above said table for clamping the rolled mattress to prevent the unrolling thereof, means for rotating said clamping means so that the mattress will be revolved above said table, the said clamping means being adapted to secure one end of the wrap ping paper whereby the paper is drawn about said mattress during the rotation of the mattress.
3. machine for wrapping mattresses comprising a pair of parallel rods for clamping a rolled mattress to prevent the unroll ing thereof, means for simultaneouly rotating said rods and the mattress clamped thereby about a common axis, one of the said rods being adapted to secure one end of a str1p of wrapping paper whereby the paper will be drawn about the mattress by the rotation of the rods, means for transversely cutting the strip of paper, and means for simultaneously applying an adhesive adjacent the transverse cut.
4. A machine for wrapping mattresses comprising a pair of parallel rods for clamp ing a rolled mattress, a removable support for holding said rods in operative position, means for simultaneously rotating said rods about a common axis, one of the said rods being adapted to secure one end of a strip of \i 'rapping paper, whereby the paper will be d rawn about the mattress by the rotation of the rods, a, bearing member yieldingly supported below said rods, means for applying a transverse layer of adhesive to said strip of paper, and means for cutting said strip adjacent said transverse layer.
A, machine for wrapping mattresses or similar articles comprising a frame for rotatably supporting a plurality of rolls of wrapping paper of different widths, a wrapping table, a horizontal pivot for said table, yielding means for normally retaining said table in a horizontal position, said table being provided with a plurality of runways through each of which a sheet of Wrapping paper is adapted to pass, spaced rods above said wrapping table for engaging opposite sides of a rolled mattress, a frame adjacent to one end of said rods, a shaft secured to said frame, means for rotating said shaft, a bearing for one end of said rods mounted in said frame, means for adjusting said bearings toward andfrmneach other in order to vary the distance between the said rods, a pivoted support adjacent the other end of said rods, bearings on said supportfor receiving said rods, the said support and bearings being movable away from the ends of the rods in order to clear the latter, means for severing the sheets of wrapping paper, and means for applying an adhesive adjacent to the severed end.
Signed at Montreal, Quebec, Canada, this 3rd day of December, 1926.
