Preferably, the knives are springpressed against the roll l4 and this spring pressure may be varied. To effect such a relation, the slides H, 118 are each bored as at 40 for the reception of helical springs 4| which are arranged to bear against the box of bearings 31 as illustrated. Each of said springs is compressed between the bearing case by a screw 42 threaded into the upper end of the bores 40, and the screws may be turned manually as by a key 43 which extends through the cross part 25 to varythe compression or" the spring 4| and thus to vary the pressure contact between the cutter disc 35 and the pressure roll 20.
According to my invention, I provide two sets of cutter discs, of which the discs 35 mounted on rod 35 are intended to cut from paper such as wall paper the molding edge whereby the paper may be suitably matched for hanging. The other set of cutters 35a, which are also preferably of disc type, is mounted on a second rod 36a extending between the slides i'l, I8 and similarly mounted in box bearings 31a. The latter described cutter means are similarly cooperatively related with the pressure roll 20 and are resiliently urged thereagainst by springs 41a arranged to be adjusted in the manner of adjustment of springs 4|.
The cutter discs are each provided with a .hub through which may extend a set screw 45 or the like operative to hold the discs in a predetermined position on the rod. Thus the cutters 35, 35a. may be moved axially of the rods 36, 36a to bear against the pressure roll 20 or may be moved to clear the ends of said pressure roll.
When either series of cutters is positioned to bear against the pressure roll 20, it may be desirable to move the cutters from such engagement without disturbing their lengthwise position in relation to' their carrying rods, as for example when positioning a new web to be cut in similar widths as a preceding web. To effect such disengagement, I provide means to move the rods bodily away from the roll 20. Such meansis illustrated in Fig. 3 and may comprise lever arms 46, 46a cooperating with the rods 36, 36a, respectively, and pivoted intermediate their ends to the slide 51. One such lever arm and its relation to rod 35 will be described. Preferably the lower end as illustrated of lever 46 is provided with an operating handle 4!, the other end forming a cam surface 48 which bears against a projecting end of the cutter carrying rod 36. As the handle 41 is rotated in a clockwise direction, Fig. 3, it will be seen that its camming end passes under the projecting end of the rod 46 to raise thesame. The raising movement is sufiicient to cause clearance between the cutting edge of the cutter 35' positioned adjacent that end of rod 36 and the pressure roll. Similarly, the lever 46a cooperates with the projecting end of the rod 36a whereby such rod may be similarly raised to actuate its cutter or cutters out of engagement with the pressure roll. Normally, the cutters 35a are used only in cutting special widths of the paper and their usual position is such as to clear the ends of the pressure roll 26. i
In some instances, it is advantageous to cut only one edge molding of the paper, while under other conditions both edges are to be out therefrom. To effect the former condition, the rod 36 may be raised at one end only, by actuating lever 45, to carry the cutter adjacent that end of the rod out of cutting cooperation with the roll 26. To meet the latter condition, that is, when the cutters at both ends of the rod are operative to out both edges from the paper, the handle 46, illustrated in its full line position, Fig. 3, is not disturbed.
In other instances, it is advisable to move the cutters at both ends of the rod from engagement with the roller 20 and, accordingly, I provide a similar rod actuating means on the slide is, by the operation of which the rod 36 may be raised bodily, thus to carry the cutters 35 away from the roll 20. Beneath the paste roll I4, I arrange a paste reservoir which may comprise a pan 50 as illustrated. The said pan is provided with studs or projections 5| which engage in slots formed in straps 52 extending from the base I I of the frame, or from the side brackets 53 auxiliary to the side pieces l2, I3 of the frame. It will be understood that the pasting roll l 4 dips into' the adhesive carried by the pan 5%! and that the cross-knurl on the peripheral surface thereof. maintains a sufficient amount of the paste on such surface so that it may apply the paste to a paper web coming in contact therewith.
A paper guide 55 is associated with the device as aforesaid and may take the form of an inclined table as illustrated in Figs. land 4. The said table has its front end supported on any desired surface such as a work bench, and its other end may bear on a cross rod 55 extending between the side frames I 2, l3 and forwardly thereof. The paper to be pasted and cut may be laid on the guide after having previously been matched and cut into proper lengths, the height of the rear edge of the table being sufiicient to deliver the edge of the paper substantially between the rolls I4, 20.
In order to direct the paper between the rolls, the guide table is formed with a fixed side edge 57 and with a movable side edge 58 which may be adjusted across the width of the table to the width of the paper being treated. The adjustable side piece 58 is held to the table by means of bolt 59 and associated wing nuts 60, the bolts being movable throughout the length of adjusting slots 6| formed in the table. A rod 62 extends between the side edges 57, 58 and is slightly raised from the upper surface of the table to permit the web being threaded between the table and the rod.
After cutting of the edge moldings from the paper, it is desirable to separate such molding from the body portion of the web and to effect this I provide molding guides 63, one mounted at each side of the machine. Said guides are preferably of V-shape construction and are mounted from adjusting bolts 64 in the side frames which extend through eyes 65 formed with the guides. Thus, the guides may move transversely of the roll 20 to accommodate the different widths of molding edges being out. To adjust the guides further, the same are partially supported by springs 66 which are carried on studs 6'! similarly car ried in the side frames l1, [8.

In use, a web of paper is laid on the-table'i'fi with its to be pastedfacing downwardly. The paper'is pushed :forward to extend between the rolls ill and '20, and by manual turning of-the' handles 68 or 69, the paper is extended between said rolls. Alternatively, the pressure roll may be raised by manipulation of lever 21 and the paper manually threaded between the rolls. The paper is then brought about the pressure roll 20, the cutter carrying rod 36 (or 36a, or both) being raised by manipulation of their raising handle 46. Upon proper adjustment of the cutter, that is to say, to cut off the required widths of the paper, the handle 46 is released and the knives drop into cutting engagement with the roll 20. The paper passing forward-1y between the cutters and the pressure roll may then be grasped and pulled forwardly, causing the rollers I4, 20 to rotate due to the weight of the pressure roll 20 and its mounting assembly. The paste carried on the surface of the roll I4 is applied to the under surface of the paper and the paper is cut by passing under the rollers (or 350.) Where a molding edge has been cut, the cut molding may be laid upon the guides 63, and continued pasting and cutting of the paper causes the cut molding to be diverted sidewardly where it may fall into a receptacle or the like. The pasted and cut web may then be delivered to the workmen engaged in hanging the paper.
Without further analysis the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of this invention that others can by applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various applications without omitting certain features that, from the standpoint of the prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention, and therefore such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalency of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a paste carrying roll, a vertically movable pressure roll adapted to press a web passing between said rolls against the first roll, thereby applying paste to one surface of the web, means to actuate the pressure roll out of such pressure relation, the pressure roll being movable by gravity into such pressure relation upon release of said means, cutting means bodily movable with said pressure roll, and resilient means urging said cutting means into cooperative cutting relation with said pressure roll.

In a device of the character described, a paste carrying roll, a vertically movable pressure roll adapted to press a web passing between said rolls against the first roll thereby applying paste to one surface of the web, means to actuate the pressure roll out of such pressure relation, the pressure roll being movable by gravity into such pressure relation upon release of said means, cutting means bodily movable with said pressure roll, resilient means urging said cutting means into cooperative relation with said pressure roll, and means to vary the efiect of said resilient means.
3. In a device of the character described, a
paste carrying roll, a vertically movable pressure roll adapted to press a web passing between said rolls against the first roll thereby applying paste to the surface of the web, means to actuate the pressure roll-outer .such pressure relation, the pressure roll being 'rr iovable by gravity into such presenter-elation upon release of said means, and cutting means-"bodilymovable with said pres sure roll and including spaced cutters :normal ly engaging said pressure roll-,and' means to actuate said cutters into and out -:of such engage- .14. Ina device or the character described, .a paste carrying rollj a vertically movable pressure roll adapted to pressa web passing between said rolls against the first roll, thereby applying paste to one surface of the web, means to actuate the pressure roll out of such pressure relation, the pressure roll being movable by gravity into such pressure relation upon release of said means, and cutting means bodily movable with said pressure roll and including spaced cutters normally en- "gaging said pressure roll, and means to actuate one or all of said cutters out of engagement.

In a device of the character described, a support including side pieces, a roll mounted for rotation between said side pieces, a slide operatively mounted in each of said side pieces, a pressure roll journaled in said slides, cutting means carried by said slides and arranged in cutting engagement with said pressure roll, manual means for actuating the slides whereby to bring the pressure roll into and out of pressure relation with the first roll, and means carried by said slides for actuating said cutting means into and out of cutting engagement with said pressureroll.
6.'In a device of the character described, a support including side pieces, a roll mounted for rotation between said side pieces, a slide operatively mounted in each of said side pieces, a pressure roll journaled in said slides, a rod extending between said slides and journaled therein, cutting means carried by said rod and normally engaging said pressure roll, and means carried by a slide operative to actuate the rod toward and away from the pressure roll.
'7. In a device of the character described, a
support including side pieces, a roll mounted for rotation between said side pieces, a slide operatively mounted in each of the side pieces, a pressure roll journaled in said slides, a rod extending between said slides and journaled therein, cutting means carried on said rod and engaging said pressure roll, and means carried by each of said slides and operative to actuate the rod bodily, or one end only thereof, toward and away from the pressure roll.

In a device of the character described, a support including side pieces, a roll mounted for rotation between said side pieces, a slide operatively mounted in each of the side pieces, a pressure roll journaled in said slides, rods extending between the slides and journaled therein, cutting means carried by said rods, and means, one for each end of a rod, carried by said slides to actuate the rods toward and away from said pressure roll.

In a device of the character described, a supporting frame, a paste reservoir mounted therein, a paste carrying roll journaled in the frame and extending into said reservoir, slides mounted for vertical movement in the frame, a pressure roll journaled in said slides, the slides and the pressure roll being movable downwardly by gravity whereby to establish normally the desired pressure relation between the pressure and paste carrying rolls, cutting means carried by said slides and cooperating with said pressure 1 by gravity whereby to establishnormally the desired pressure relation between the pressure and paste carrying rolls, cutting means carried by said slides and cooperating with said pressure roll, means for actuating said cutting means relatively of said slides and pressure roll, and means for actuating the slides and pressure roll upwardly whereby to interrupt said pressure relation. 1
