To all whom it may omwem! Be it known that I, ARTHUR E. HoLMns, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in Pittsfield, in, thecounty of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Machines for Use in Applying Paper Coverings or'Coatings to Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for use in applying paper coverings-or coatings upon articles such as paper boxes or the like, and aims to provide improvements therein.
Paper boxes board, and the top or bottom, and sides, covered with paper, frequently a decoratcd or good grade of paper. box is some times covered other parts. Furthermore, a strip of paper for covering the top and bottom, of, a different Width than the strip of paper used for covering the sldes, is usually necessary, and
hence the covering paper is usually taken from a plurality of rolls.
The present invention provides a machine or device,by the use of which the applying of the paper coatings to the boxes is much facilitated, the operation of covering .the box being simplified, shortened and cheapened. Other features'of improvement will be hereinafter pointed out.

The 'turning' of the shaft 4, tofleifect the shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig; 4, is preferably accomplished by means of a treadle 15. The shaft 4 has splined thereto a gear 16. The treadl'e is connected to the gear by a rod 17.

The doctor may conveniently comprise a rod .29 frictionally held in its bearings, having one or more scraper bars 29, thereon. The

The strip then passes beneath a guide or separator bar 40, and from thence over a cutter bar 41. At this point the strip of paper may be pulled forward by the operator and applied to the box, as hereinafter explained.
The roll from which the strip of paper Z comes, may be mounted in a hanger 50, the strip passing over a gluingroller 51 dipping in the glue pot 52, thence passing through a doctor 53 which acts to scrape surplus glue from the strip, and then passes over one or the other of the rollers 55 on the vertical frame 56. From thence the strip passes over the guide or separator bar 40, and from thence over the cutter bar ell, Where it may be pulled forward by the operator, and used as hereinafter explained;
The hangers 25 and 50, brackets 34; and 36, glue pots 27 and 52, and vertical frames 31 and 56, may be conveniently mounted upon a pairof bars 60 running longitudinally of the machine and supported upon posts 61.
Operation: In applying the paper coverings to the box, the. sides are usually covered first. The mandrel 1 is turned upon its side, by depressing the treadle 15 which rotates the. gear 16 splined upon the shaft 4. The
shaft 4: receives arotation of 90, and is held in this position byfthe catch 19 coming into engagement with the treadle. The strip of paper Y is pulled forward, the front edge placed at one of the corners of thebox, and the box and mandrel rotated until it makes a full turn. A treadle is then depressed, which acts thrugh a rod"? 1 upon a pivoted knife 72 to sever' (in conjunction with the cutter 11) the strip of paper Z. The detached end is then applied to the box. When the margins of the strip are wider than the box, the margins are turned over the edges of the box and pressed against the inner sides or bottom of the box.
The treadle 15 is then disengaged from the catch 19, and the spring 10 on the shaft 6 acts to rotate the shaft 1 back 90 to the vertical position shown in Fig. 1. The strip of paper Z is then pulled forward, and when a suflicient length has been pulled forward, the, treadle 70 is again depressed to cause the cutter 72 to sever the strip Z.
In order that the portion severed for the top or bottom of the box may be of the right length, an adjustable stop is provided. The rod 4 is slid in the bearing 5 until the side of the box comes against the stop 80.
The severed portion of the strip Z will then be of the rightlength to cover the bottom of the box. Moreover, when the mandrel is on its side the severed strip of paper will be of substantially the appropriate length to lap at the edges after passing around the box.
'As the strip Y is run off more rapidly than the strip Z, and has less periods of rest, the gluing roller 26 is preferably placed at a greater distance from the cutter bar 11 than the gluing roller 51 which applies glue to the strip Z. By this arrangement a more uniform tempering of the glue upon the strips is accomplished.
In order to vary the tempering of the glue applied to the strips, the distance which the respective strips Y and Z travel between the gluing rolls and the cutter bar may be varied by passing the strips over one or the other of the rollers 30 or 55. Differences in the character of the paper, among other things, may occasion a difierence in thedegree of tempering which the respective strips require.
The inventive ideas may receive other mechanical expressions than those specifically illustrated and described.
I claim as myinvention:
"1. A machine of the character described, comprising a mandrel for. holding a box in position to have coverings applied to its top or bottom, and sides,-said mandrel being adapted to be turned to upright position or to a position on its side, and means for support-ing a plurality of separated superposed paper strips adapted to be applied to the top or bottom, and sides, of the box on the mandrel, said mandrel in its upright and side positions being adapted to take up a position which is centered with respect to the strips which are to be applied.
2. A machine of the character described, comprising a mandrel for holding a box in position to have coverings applied to its top or bottom, and sides, means for support ing a plurality of separated superposed paper strips adapted to be applied to the top or bottom, and sides, of the box on the mandrel, and means for turning said mandrel from one position to another, one position being an upright position and the other position being a position on its side, said mandrel in its upright and side positions being moved to a position which is centered with respect to the strips which are to be applied.
3. A machine of the character described, comprising a mandrel for holding a box in position to have. coverings applied to its top or bottom, and sides, said mandrel being adapted to be turned to upright position or tea position on its side, and means for supporting a plurality of separated superposed paper strips adapted to be appliedto the top or bottom, and sides, of the box on the mandrel, said mandrel inits upright and side positions being adapted to take up a position which is centered with respect to the strips which are to be applied,,said mandrel being mounted upon a rotatable support, and being rotatable in said support, and means for rotating said support for bringing said mandrel from one position to another, one position being an upright position and the other position being a position upon its side. i 1

A machine of the character described, comprising a mandrel for holding a box in position to have coverings applied to its top or bottom, and sides, and means for turning said mandrel from an upright position to a position on its side, said mandrel in its upright and side positions, taking up a position which is substantially centered with relation to a common mid-plane.
5. A machine of the character described, comprising a mandrel r'or holding a box in position to have coverings applied to its top or bottom, and sides, and means for turning said mandrel from an upright position to a position on its side, said means comprising a rotatable support for the mandrel, a gear on said support, a rack on a fixed part of the machine, and a treadle connected to said gear and adapted to turn said gear tosimultaneously turn saidsupport and displace it transversely of the machine.
6. A machine ofthe character described,
comprising a mandrel for holding a box in position to have coverings applied to its top or bottom, and sides, and means for turning said mandrel from an upright position to a position on itss'ide, said means comprising a rotatable support for the mandrel, said support being movable axially of the machine, a gear splined on said support, a rack on a fixed part of the machine, and a treadle connected to said gear and adapted to turn said gear to simultaneously turn saidsupport and chine.
7 A machine of the character described,
