To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTIAS M. Hnsrao, citizen of the United States, residmg at Ortley, in the county of Roberts and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wall-Paper Trimming and Pasting Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame.
My invention has for its object .to provide an 'improved wall-paper trimming, pasting'and hanging apparatus; and, to this end, consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter defined and described in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters ndicate like parts throughout the'several views. Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 1s a planview of the apparatus, arranged to trim a roll of wall-paper, some parts being broken away; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, showing the roll of paper partly trimmed, some parts being broken away; Fig. 3 is a view principally in transverse vertical section taken on the line m a of Fig. 1, showing the apparatus arranged to apply the paste to the roll of trnnmed wallpaper, and also showing the paper-hanging device applied to the outer end of the roll of paper; Fig. 1 is a view corresponding to Fig. 3 with the exception that the paperhanging device is removed, and showing, by full and broken lines, the supplemental frame in inoperative and operative positions, respectively; Fig. 5 is a detail view,

As shown in Fig. 1, the ends of. the to) board 5 project beyond the end bars l, anti normally rest on the upper longitudinal edges of the end boards 1, to limit the down ward swinging movement of the end bars 4. Secured to the inner face of each end board 1 is a horizontally extended cleat 7 having formed therein a pair of laterally spaced open seats 8 and an open seat 9, located intermediately between the seats 8. YVhen the supplemental frame is in a closed or operative position, the end bars 4 thereof rest directly on the cleats 7, and close th Removably mounted within the main frame is an open paste pan 10, having upwardly diverging sides, with rolled upper longitudinal edges, in which are mounted rods 11. The ends of said rods 11 project beyond the sides of said pan, and are mounted in the seats 8 for supporting the paste pan. Journaled 1n the seats 9 is a horizontally extended shaft 12. having secured for rotation therewith a relatively large pastedistributing roller 13, arranged to work within the paste pan 10. \Vhen the supplemental frame is turned into a position, indicated by full lines in Fig. 4, the paste pan and distributing roller may be readily applied to or removed from the main frame.
Turn-buttons 11, secured tothe upper longitudinal edges of the end boards 1, are arranged to be turned over the end bars 4., and'thereby lock the supplemental frame closed.
Extending parallel with the paste-distributing roller 13 is a spindle 15, arranged to hold a roll of wall-paper Z in contact with said distributing roller. The ends of this spindle 15 are mounted in upwardly and rearwardly inclined guides 16, secured to the upper longitudinal edges of the endbars 4. The positions of the guides 16 are such that the spindle 15 will move toward the distributing roller 13, under the action of gravity, and thereby hold the roll of paper in contact with the said distributing roller, so that a relatively thick coating of paste will be applied to said paper, which is desirable in hanging paper on theceiling. When paper isto be applied to the' walls, only a relatively thin coat of paste is necessary, in which case coiled springs 17 are provided for drawing the spindle toward the distributing roller 13, thereby pressing the roll of paper tightly onto the distributing roller. These springs 17, as shown, are permanently secured, at their lower ends, to the outer faces of the end boards 1, and removably secured, at their other ends, to the projecting ends of the spindle 15. By this arrangement, the springs 17 may be ren-- dered operative or inoperative, at will.
Laterallgspacedstop plates 18 are provided for properly positioning the roll of paper Z on the spindle 15', and holding the same against endjvise sliding. movementthereon. The rear ends of these stop plates 18 are hinged, at 19, for edgewise swinging movement to and from operative positions on the ends of U-shaped holders 20. The holders are slidably mounted in a longitudinally extended slot 21 cut in thetop board 5 of the supplemental frame. When in operative positions, these stop plates 18 engage the ends of theroll of paper Z, and
rest, at their lower longitudinal edges, di
rectly on the spindle 15. When turned into inoperative positions, the stop plates 18 rest in an upwardly and rearwardly inclined position on the top board 5, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. Wedges 22, insertible through the lower depending portions of the holders 20, frictionally hold said holders in different adjustments. From the spindle 15, the wall-paper Z passes over the upper face of the distributing roller 13, and thence under a guide roller 23 journaled in bearings 24 on the upper longitudinal edges of the end bars 4. Obviously, the spindle 15, guide roller 23 and stop plates 18'are all movable with the supplemental frame to and from operative positions. I
Before the paste is applied to the paper, the paper is trimmed by 'a'knife 25, adjustably secured by a spring clamp 26 to the free end of a curved arm 27, supported from the top board 5 of the supplemental frame.
This arm 27 is secured to the topboard 5, in different longitudinaladjustments thereon, by a U-shaped holder 28, which slidably works in a longitudinally extended slot 29 formed in the top board 5 parallel with the slot 21. A wedge 30, insertible through the lower depending portion of the holder 28, is provided for frictionally clamping the arm 27 onto the top board 5. The arm 27 holds the knife 25 directly over the distributing roller 13, in a position to cut the paper as same passes over said roller, The spring clamp 26 permits the knife 25 to be set in difierent angular adjustments, in respect to the distributing roller 13, and also permits said knife to be readily applied to or removed from the arm 27. s

From the distributing roller, the trimmed paper passes under the guide roller 23, and is rewound on a winding spindle 31 'journaled in the upper ends of bearings 32, removably mounted in keeper brackets 33 secured to the end boards 1. The winding spindle 31 is provided with a hand crank 34, by which it may. be rotated. It is, also, provided with a clamping rod 35, between which and the spindle 31, the-outer end of the paper to be wound thereon is secured. One end of this clamping rod 35 terminates in a hook 36 slidably mounted on a flattened portion 37 of the spindle 31, and the other end thereof is engageable, by an endwise sliding movement, with a loop 38 on the spindle 31. After the paper is wound on thespindle 31, the same may be removed therefrom by lifting the bearings 32 from the keeper brackets 33, removing the left hand (with respect to Fig 1) bearing 32 from the winding spindle 31, drawing out the clamping rod 35, and then removing the winding spindle 31 from the re-wound roll of paper Z.
Obviously, to trim a roll of paper, all that is necessary to do after the knife 25- is properly positioned, is to rotate the crank 34 and re-wind the roll.of paper from the spindle 15 onto the spindle 31. derstood that before the paper is trimmed all paste must be removed from the distributing roller 13 and the'paste pan 10 removed from the main frame, provided the same is filled with paste. After the required number of rolls of paper have been trimmed, the spindle 31 and its bearings 32 are removed from the apparatus. The pan 10 is then filled with paste and a roll of the trimmed paper placed on the spindle 15. The outer end of this roll of paper is passed over the distributing roller 13 and under the guide roller 23.
To facilitate the hanging of the paper, either on the wall or ceiling, I provide a paper-hanging device, comprising a handle or pole 39 having secured to one end thereof a clamping head comprising a relatively fixed jaw 40 and a relatively movable jaw 41. The jaw 40 is rigidly secured to one end of the pole 39 and has formed in its inner face a longitudinally extended V- shaped groove 42. The jaw 41 is hinged at 43 to the jaw 40, and has formed on one of its longitudinal edges a V-shaped surface arranged to enter the groove 42 and l It is, of course, un-.
stand upon the floor and raise the clamping head to a point as high as the ceiling. To release the paper from the clamping head while said clamping head is held by the pole 39, a flexible connection 47 is secured at one end to an extension 48 on the jaw 41, and with its other end terminating within easy reach from the free end of the pole 39. The intermediate portion of this connection 47 works through an eye as on the bracket 46. v
To apply paper to the walls the improved apparatus is used in the following manner: The main frame is placed'on the floor about six inches from the mop board and the clamping head applied to the outer end of the trimmed roll of paper arranged to run over the paste-distributing roller as previously described. The clamping head is then raised by the pole 39 to a point as high up on the wall as it is desired to have the paper hung. When the wall paper is properly matched with the piece previously applied to the wall, the same is pressed against the wall by' a roller 5(), journaled in bearings 51 on the jaw 40. The paper is then released from the clamping head by drawing on the flexible connection 47, thus releasing the jaw 41 from engagement with the jaw 40. After the paper is released from the clamping head, the roller 50 is then moved upward over the paper to pressthe'extreme upper edge portion thereof into place on the wall. I Said roller is then moved downward, over the remaining portion of the paper, by holding the pole 39 in either one or both hands. The paper may now be cut the proper length, along the top of the mop board, and the machine moved laterally into a position to apply the next strip of paper, and so on until the wall is papered.
The paper-hanging device above described will be-found highly serviceable in applying paper to the ceiling.
\Vhen pasting paper of standard widths, the knife 25, of course, will be removed from the apparatus; but the same will befound highly serviceable in cutting the paper, at the same time the paste is applied thereto, in odd widths, to fit into corners and against window and door casings.

the combination with a frame, of a paste pan mounted on said frame, a paste-dis tributmg roller arranged to work 1n said panja movable support for holding a roll of pan mounted on said frame, a paste-distributing roller arranged to work in said pan, a movable support for holding a roll of paper in contact with said paste-distributing roller, and a guide plate, engageable with one end of said roll of paper, and mounted on-said frame for adjustment longitudinally of said paste-distributing roller, and for movement to and from an operative position, transversely of said roller.

In an apparatus of the kind described, the combination Withmain and supplemental frames, the latter being hinged to the former for swinging movement to and from an operative positionfiof a paste pan removably mounted on said main frame, a paste-distributing roller removably journaled on said main frame, and working in said paste pan, spindle guides on said supplemental frame, a spindle mounted in said guides for parallel movements toward and from said paste-distributing roller, arranged to move toward said roller under the action of gravity and hold a roll of paper mounted thereon in contact withsaid roller, a paper guide roller journaled on said supplemental frame, said spindle 'and guide roller being movable with said supplemental frame to and from operative positions, and springs, operative, at will, for yieldingly drawing said spindle toward said roller.

In an apparatus of the kind described, the combination with main and supplemental frames, the latter being hinged to the former for swinging movement to and from an operative position, of a paste pan removably. mounted on said main frame, a paste-distributing roller removably journaled on said main frame, and working in said paste pan, spindle guides on said supplemental frame, a spindle mounted in said guides .for parallel movements toward and from said paste-distributing roller, arranged to move toward said roller under the action of gravity, and hold a roll of paper mounted thereon in contact with said roller, a paper guide roller journaled 011 said supplemental frame, said spindle and guide roller being movable with said supplemental frame to and from operative positions, springs, operative at will, for yieldingly drawing said spindle toward said roller, and a pairof laterally spaced guide plates engageable with the ends of said roll of paper and adjustably mounted on said supplemental frame for movements longitudinally of said spindk and 6. the combination with a frame, of a roller joui'naled on said frame, a spindle journaled on said frame, for supporting a roll of paper, and a knife mounted on said frame, for cooperation with said roller arranged to trim paper passing over said roller from said supporting spindle, for angular adjustments transversely of said roller and lateral adjustments longitudinally of said roller.
